LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph women's tennis team hosted Sweet Briar in the WildCats' final regular season home match on Wednesday. The Vixens held off the 'Cats 4-3.
Randolph's overall record now stands at 9-7 overall and 6-3 in the ODAC. Sweet Briar improves to 14-5 overall and 8-1 in the conference.
The Vixens led 1-0 after doubles play. Lena Kersten (Bonn, Germany/Otto Kuhne Schule) and Lize van Veen (Harderwijk, The Netherlands RSG Slingerbos) were able to defeat Alex Guilarte and Isadora Lima 6-4 at first doubles. At second doubles, Fleur Gaalman (Abcoude, Utrecht, Netherlands Haarlemmermeer Lyceum Dalton) and Emma Bauer (Munich, Germany) were edged out by Juli Caracciolo and Lucia Bovard 7-6.
In the singles portion, Kersten won by Caracciolo's retirement with Kersten leading 5-0 in the first set. Gaalman went three sets in her second singles match against Guilarte. Guilarte won the first set 6-3 and Gaalman claimed the next two sets 6-1 and 6-0. Van Veen defeated Lima 6-4, 6-3 at third singles. The match came down to fourth singles with Bauer going against Maggie Minton. Minton won the first set 6-3 and Bauer the second set 6-3. Minton defeated Bauer 6-3 in the third set to win the match for the Vixens.
Randolph travels to Averett on Saturday for its regular season finale. The match will begin at 11:00 a.m.
