LYNCHBURG, Va. – Randolph College softball battled through a chilly Wednesday afternoon doubleheader against ODAC foe Guilford, but came up just short in both contests. The WildCats were blanked 0-2 in the opener before mounting a spirited comeback attempt in game two, ultimately falling 4-6.
Guilford broke through after a Randolph error allowed the go-ahead run to score. The Quakers had an RBI double to give them a 2-0 lead. Humble was solid in the circle, allowing six hits and striking out two over seven innings with no earned runs.
Randolph had its chances offensively, racking up six hits—including knocks from Humble,
Chesney Shook,
Edie Jennings,
Desiree Scott,
Haili Gonzalez, and
Rachel Arce—but couldn't push a run across.
In game two, the WildCats showed resilience, outhitting the Quakers 12-11 and putting together a pair of rallies, but couldn't overcome an early deficit.
Guilford struck quickly in the first inning, scoring three runs highlighted by a two-run double. Randolph responded in the bottom of the second with RBIs from
Makenzee Kenney and
Laura Herzig to cut the deficit to 3-2.
After the Quakers added a fourth run in the third, Randolph chipped away again in the fifth.
Riley Shupe drove in Herzig with a single and advanced to third on the throw, making it a 4-3 ballgame. Guilford tacked on two key insurance runs in the seventh.
Randolph didn't go quietly, as Herzig capped a strong game at the plate with her second run scored, driven in by
Lexi Hawkins in the bottom of the seventh, but that would be all for the WildCats.
Herzig paced Randolph at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Humble added a 3-for-3 performance, while Hawkins and Shupe each tallied key RBI hits. Pitcher
Austyn Moran went the distance for the WildCats, striking out five on 11 hits and five runs.
The 'Cats are back at Randolph Softball Complex on Wednesday for their final home game against Sweet Briar.
