Softball Sweep Averett in Extra-Inning Thriller and Shutout Victory

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Randolph softball team hosted ODAC opponent Averett for a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The WildCats defeated the Cougars 3-2 in extra innings and swept 2-0 in the second game.

The WildCats (3-15, 2-0) got the ball rolling in the second inning when Haili Gonzalez delivered an RBI double to left center, bringing home Kieran Wrighter for an early 1-0 lead. Averett (10-10, 2-2) responded late with the tying run in the seventh on an RBI single, the Cougars then took a 2-1 lead in the eighth after a double to left center.

The WildCats did not go down without a fight. Rylee Humble came through with a clutch RBI double to score Addie Bowen to even the score. 

With the game tied in the bottom of the eighth, Zoe Watson put the ball in play, reaching on an error that allowed Kaitlyn Wills to cross the plate for the game-winning run.

Austyn Moran pitched a complete game for the WildCats, allowing just two runs (one earned) on nine hits while striking out to earn her first win.

Humble led offensively for the 'Cats, going 3-of-4 with an RBI, while Gonzalez and Watson played key roles in game one.

In game two, the WildCats shutout the Cougars. Randolph got on the board in the third inning when Humble delivered an RBI single to third base, scoring Chesney Shook for a 1-0 lead. They extended the lead in the fourth when Lacey Lucado singled to left field, bringing home Sammie Carroll for what proved to be the final run of the game.

Aubree Bass was dominant in the circle, tossing five scoreless innings while allowing one hit. Paige Scruggs started the game and pitched two hitless innings before handing it off to Bass to secure her first win.

The team limited Averett to just one hit in the game. Edie Jennings recorded the lone extra-base hit for the WildCats with a double, while Shook also swiped a base.

The 'Cats are back in action on the road, Wednesday, in Virginia Beach to face Virginia Wesleyan at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
