Women’s Tennis Defeats Guilford 6-1 in Spring Home Opener

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph women's tennis team hosted Guilford in their spring season opener on Saturday afternoon. The WildCats won 6-1 over the Quakers.

The WildCats even their overall record at 2-2 and are 1-0 in ODAC play.

Randolph won all three doubles match to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Lena Kersten (Bonn, Germany/Otto Kuhne Schule) and Lize van Veen (Harderwijk, The Netherlands RSG Slingerbos)  defeated Ashley Belnap and Erick Mendez 6-4 at first doubles. Fleur Gaalman (Abcoude, Utrecht, Netherlands Haarlemmermeer Lyceum Dalton) and Emma Bauer (Munich, Germany) won 6-3 over Chandler Sizemore and Jolie Nhouyvanisvong at second doubles. Sabrina Dickerson (Brookneal, Va.) and Gianna Cabrera (Portsmouth, Va.) were 6-1 winners at third doubles against Amy Soto Salgado and LaNyia Ward.

Kersten easily handled Belnap 6-0, 6-0 at first singles as did Gaalman against Nhouyvanisvong at third singles. Bauer won 6-1, 6-1 over Sizemore at third singles. Dickerson notched a 6-0, 6-2 win against Soto Salgado at fifth singles. Maddie Mills (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) was a 6-2, 6-3 winner at sixth singles over Bethany Lupo.

"It's a great feeling to start out the spring with a big ODAC win against a Guilford team we lost to 5-4 last year," said head coach Sam Martinez. "Full deserved and awesome for our two seniors Sabrina and Gianna to play really well too. Getting the doubles point as the start is always a huge momentum builder and the team just carried it throughout singles."

Randolph's next match will be March 10 in Hilton Head, S.C. The WildCats will face Lake Forest College at 9:00 a.m.
