NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Randolph softball team traveled to #9 Christopher Newport for a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. The Captains won 8-0 in game one. The WildCats made a run for the comeback, but the Captains took game two in 9-6.
Randolph had five hits in the first game.
Lacey Lucado was 2-of-3 in the game. Laura Herzing came up with two stolen bases.
Haili Gonzalez had a stolen base while going 1-of-2.
Addie Bowen and
Makenzee Kenney each had one hit.
Paige Scruggs led the effort pitching 1.2 innings, giving up five hits and five runs while striking out two.
Hailey Metzger followed with 1.2 innings, allowing two hits and three runs.
Rylee Humble pitched 0.1 innings.
In the second game, the Captains struck early in the first inning with a home run to right center to bring in two runs. Then, a double to left field for the Captains added two more runs to their total. It was a four-run second inning for CNU to open up the lead 8-0.Â
Both teams remained scoreless in the third and fourth innings. However, in the fifth inning, the WildCats found some offensive rhythm when
Addy Compton scored on an error from the Captains.
Rachel Arce got an RBI for bringing in
Kaitlyn Wills to home plate. CNU responded with one run in the fifth on a homer, the score 9-2 after the fifth inning.Â
A comeback was in the works for the WildCats in the sixth inning. Compton's single, 2 RBI, to center field advanced Chensey Shook to second to bring in
Michaela Williams and
Sammie Carroll. The score was 4-9. Shook was able to add another run off a wild pitch from the Captains. A play from
Delaney Sipes brought in Compton for the run. The WildCats were down 6-9 after the sixth. The Captains held scoreless in the sixth and the WildCats held scoreless in the seventh for a CNU victory in game two.
Compton was 1-of-2 with two runs and two RBIs. Wills went 1-of-2 with had one run. Arce and Sipes both each had one RBI.Â
On the mound,
Austyn Moran pitched 1.2 innings, allowing six hits and eight runs.
Aubree Bass pitched 4.1 innings allowing one hit and one run with six strikeouts for a season-high.
The 'Cats are back home for their home opener on Saturday against Greensboro College. The first game is at 1 p.m. and the second is set for 3 p.m.
