Women's Basketball Wins, 64-58, Against VWU

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Randolph women's basketball took the trip down to Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday for a final regular season ODAC game. The WildCats in a close battle came out on top winning 64-58 over the Marlins. The WildCats improve to 12-13, 7-9 in conference play and the Marlins are now 5-19, 1-15 in the ODAC.

The Marlins took the early lead with back-to-back jumpers. Kylie Stark was the first to score for the WildCats with a jumper. The Marlins were up 12-4 with an 8-2 run at 3:25 in the quarter. Imani Hardin drained a three-pointer to bring the score within five, and then Maddie Pabon, off a steal from Kaileigh Gunter, hit a three-pointer to be down two, 10-12. The Marlins added a layup and Stark closed out the quarter with a three-pointer. The Marlins up, 14-13.

A quick layup from Taniya Jackson gave the WildCats their first lead of the game, but a layup on the other end put the Marlins back on top by one. A converted free throw from Stark tied the game 16-all with 7:50 to go. Not too long after, Jackson hit a three to push their lead by three, 19-16. The Marlins added converted free throws, the score 18-19. The WildCats then went on a 9-0 run to lead 27-18 with 4:46 left in the second quarter. The Marlins, trying to come back, added a jumper and layup, but an 8-7 run for the WildCats put them up 35-29 going into halftime.

There were early points for both teams to start the third quarter. There was a scoring drought for about four minutes until at 3:18 Lexanna Oge made a layup to put the 'Cats up 41-31. To close out the quarter, the Marlins had an 8-3 run to close the gap, 39-44. The Marlins were back within three with 7:56 to go in the fourth quarter, 43-46, then got within one after a made jumper. The WildCats then responded with a layup from Simone Brown and three-pointer from Hardin. The Marlins' offense didn't back down, added two layups, the score 51-49, "Cats advantage. It was a battle of the offense between both teams in the last two minutes, but it was the WildCats that maintained control to win 64-58.

Stark led the way with 16 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Teniyah Crenshaw-Patterson contributed 13 points, three rebounds, and one block. Hardin off the bench had a season-high 13 points shooting 3-of-3 from behind the arc. She also added three rebounds and one steal. Brown had eight points,  nine rebounds and one block. Jackson added seven points and two steals for the WildCats.

As a team, they shot 47.2% from the field and 41.2% from the three. The WildCats had 34 points in the paint and 21 points off of turnovers. The Marlins had the rebounding advantage with 39 to the WildCats' 30.

Randolph now prepares for the Quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament which begins Tuesday. The 'Cats will hit the road to Randolph-Macon at 7:00 p.m. The winner moves on to Salem, Va. for the semifinals on Friday.
