CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Randolph men's basketball team went on the road Saturday to Johnson and Wales for a non-conference matchup. Three WildCats reached doubles figures as Randolph defeated JWU 80-72.
Randolph evens its overall record at 2-2. Johnson and Wales remains winless at 0-5.
The home team WildCats scored the first basket of the game to lead 2-0 at 18:23. Randolph pushed ahead with an 11-4 run to go up 11-6 inside of 14 minutes remaining on the game clock. Johnson and Wales answered with a run of its own to go up 20-16 at 10:14. The WildCats' 16-7 run put them ahead 32-27 with 3:36 remaining in the first half. JWU finished off the half on a 10-0 run to lead 37-32 at the break.
In the second half, Randolph started off with a 9-2 run to take a 41-39 lead. Johnson and Wales briefly grabbed the lead back but a three-point basket by Steven Burgess Jr. (Coeur d' Alene, ID Coeur d'Alene HS) at 15:03 gave Randolph a one-point lead. The 'Cats would go on to add to their advantage as another three from Burgess put Randolph up 62-53 with 8:16 remaining in the game. Randolph held the lead for the remainder of the contest only dropping to as low as five points with just over two minutes left to play and with 37 seconds left but the WildCats converted three free throws in the final 35 seconds to finish with the eight-point win.
Randolph shot 26-of-62 (41.9%) on the day and was 9-of-25 (36%) from behind the three-point arc. The WildCats were efficient from the charity stripe converting 19-of-21 (90.5%) of its attempts. The WildCats controlled the glass with a 49-33 advantage over JWU.
Burgess Jr. led all scorers with 20 points. Chase Depriest (Clifton Forge, Va./Alleghany) finished with 17 points and nine rebounds. He was 3-for-8 in three-point attempts. Trey Miller (Virginia Beach, Va./Green Run HS) had a double-double with 13 points and 17 rebounds, dished out three assists, and came away with two steals. His 17 rebounds ties the Randolph game record that was set in 2011 by Derrick Woods-Morrow. Khalil Caple (Suffolk, Va,/Kings Fork HS) nearly had a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
Randolph is back home as it hosts Mary Baldwin on Tuesday. Game time from Giles Gymnasium will be at 5:00 p.m.
