GREENSBORO, N.C. - Randolph's women's basketball team picked up a strong road win on Wednesday night, defeating Greensboro 72–58 inside Hanes Gymnasium. Three WildCats got into double-digits with a dominating performance on the court.
The opening saw the WildCats get on the board first with a layup from
Sophia Stevens. The Pride got on the board making one of two free throws. The WildCats extended their lead with a go ahead pass from
Pariz Minor to
Maddie Pabon for the layup. The 'Cats up 4-1 at the 7:55 minute mark. The Pride closed it within one with a jumper followed by a three-pointer to put them up 6-4 with 5:50 to go. A layup from
Lexanna Oge tied the game off an assist from
Amaya Thrash. The Pride took the lead back after two made free throws but another lay up from Oge, assisted by
Jaellen Hillery, tied the game. As the minutes wound down a 10-4 run for the WildCats closed out the quarter 18-12.
The Pride came out hot with a layup and three-pointer to put them down one 17-18. The WildCats quickly followed with a layup from Thrash, assisted by Oge. Pabon drained the three-pointer to push the lead 23-17 with 6:58 to go. After that, it was even run for both teams, scoring 13 points to close the half with Randolph leading 36-30.
Makiah Scott opened the third quarter with a driving layup followed by Minor with a jumper to push the lead to 10, 40-30. It was another quarter of runs for both teams, Randolph outscored Greensboro 17-13 to lead by 10 heading into the final quarter, 53-43.
Out the gate was Thrash with a three-pointer, assisted by Minor followed up with a jumper by
Taniya Jackson. Free throws put the Pride on the board in the fourth quarter, but Thrash responded with a three-pointer to push the lead 61-45. The WildCats went on a 6-0 run to push their lead to 22-points, 67-45 with 4:48 to go. The Pride attempted to comeback, going a 13-5 run to close out the game, but it wasn't enough as the WildCats sealed the victory, 72-58.
Randolph's performance was powered by its dominant night on the glass, outrebounding Greensboro 63-42 and scoring 48 points in the paint. Stevens and Thrash led the WildCats with 14 points each, while
Brooklyn Finnerty added 10 off the bench with nine rebounds. Minor controlled the boards with 12 rebounds, Pabon with nine rebounds, Stevens with eight rebounds and Hillery with seven. The team was 42.6% from the field, 27.8% from the three, and 52.9% from the line.
The 'Cats return to action on the road on Tuesday against Mary Washington at 6 p.m.
