Men’s Soccer Comes Back to Defeat Shenandoah 2-1

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's soccer team hosted Shenandoah in an ODAC clash on Saturday evening at WildCat Stadium. The Hornets took an early lead but the WildCats came back to score twice in less than two minutes of game time to come back and defeat SU 2-1.

The victory ends a six-game winless streak for Randolph as it improves to 3-6-3 overall and is now 1-2 in the ODAC. Shenandoah drops to 4-4-3 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play.

The Hornets controlled the first half of play as they held a 7-3 advantage in shots. Shenandoah got on the board in the 14th minute on a solo shot by James Blalock. Randolph had two shots on goal in the period.

The beginning of the second half saw the Randolph defense hold the Hornets to just one shot in the first 10 minutes but the WildCats still could not find their offense. The 'Cats finally broke through as Corey Williams (Lynchburg, Va./Appomattox County HS) sent a long pass to Marcus Cortes (Annandale, Va./Annandale) who was able to finesse the ball inside of the left post an in to tie the game at 1-1. Randolph didn't have to wait long for its next scoring opportunity. In a scrum in the middle, Lance Yeobah (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian HS) headed a shot toward the net that was denied but the rebound made its way to Sage Dombrovkis (Ruckersville, Va./William Monroe HS) who tapped the ball in to give Randolph the 2-1 lead.

Dominic Cortes (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) turned away three shots in the last five minutes of play to preserve the WildCat lead. The Randolph defense was also able to come through and prevent any Shenandoah threat.

Overall shots were in the Hornets' favor 13-8. The teams were tied in shots on goal 6-6. Shenandoah had an 8-0 lead in corner kicks.

Dominic Cortes finished with five saves on the night. His counterpart for Shenandoah Jake Ziervogel had four saves.

Randolph is back in action next Saturday when it travels to Eastern Mennonite. Game time will be at 3:00 p.m.
