LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's basketball team returned to Giles Gymnasium for the first time in over a month as the WildCats hosted Washington and Lee in an ODAC matchup on Saturday afternoon. The two teams played a competitive game but the Generals came out on the winning end with a 69-65 victory over the 'Cats.
The WildCats fall to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in ODAC play. W&L improves to 3-8 and 1-1 in conference play.
Randolph led 5-4 less than two minutes into the contest but the Generals went on a 9-0 run to go ahead 13-5 at the 16:10 mark. The 'Cats were able to bring their deficit down to a point, 15-14, with 11:16 remaining on the clock. Washington and Lee again pushed ahead with an 11-2 run to go up 26-16 with 5:29 to go in the half. W&L led by as much as 11 points, 30-19, at 4:25, but Randolph was able to come back and cut its deficit to five points, 37-32, at halftime.
Amari Gorham's (Yorktown, Va./Yorktown) layup 25 seconds into the second period brought the WildCats to within three points. Washington Lee outscored the WildCats 10-4 to lead 47-38. Randolph came back to make it a one-possession game, 51-49, with 8:38 left to play. The Generals forged ahead to go up 61-52, with under five minutes left. The 'Cats once again brought their deficit down to two points, 67-65, with 24 seconds left. The Generals converted two free throws with 22 seconds left to hold off the Randolph comeback and come away with the victory.
The WildCats shot 23-of-61 (37.7%) on the day but just 6-of-27 (22.2%) from behind the three-point arc. Randolph outscored Washington and Lee 14-6 in second chance points, 34-12 in bench points, and 30-26 in the paint. The WildCats also controlled the boards with a 41-31 advantage.
Jordan Phillips-McLoyd (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) led the WildCats with 15 points and added three assists. Moustapha Diop (Fuquay Varina, N.C./Apex Friendship) scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Evan Wiehe (Cleveland, OH/Nordonia) finished with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Maurice Davis (Richmond, Va./James River) led the team with nine rebounds and put up nine points.
Randolph travels to Ashland to face Randolph-Macon on Wednesday. Game time will be at 7:00 p.m.
