ROANOKE, Va. - A strong defensive performance and balanced scoring effort powered the Randolph College women's basketball team to a commanding 65-30 victory over Hollins on Tuesday night at the Main Gymnasium. The WildCats improved to 10-9 overall and 5-5 in ODAC play, while Hollins dropped to 10-7 (4-6 ODAC).
"Great intensity on the defensive ends," said head coach
Steve Lanpher. "We followed and executed the game plan well."
The WildCats set the tone early, holding Hollins to just four points in the opening quarter. The WildCats' defense forced tough shots, limiting their opponent to 1-of-15 shooting (6.7%) from the field. Offensively,
Renee Clines got off to a hot start, scoring 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including four three-pointers for a season-high in both categories, as well as nine steals. The second quarter saw the WildCats extend its lead with a 25-point outburst, highlighted by
Kylie Stark's all-around play. Stark finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists, securing a double-double. At halftime, the WildCats led 36-16.
"Offensively, we were unselfish and moved the ball well with 16 assists," said Lanpher.
The 'Cats continued its defensive dominance in the second half, holding Hollins to just five points in the third quarter and nine in the fourth. Hollins struggled from the field, shooting 14.1% (9-of-64) and just 16.7% from beyond the arc. The WildCats controlled the glass, out rebounding Hollins 49-47, with
Teniyah Crenshaw-Patterson also grabbing 10 boards while adding 12 points.
"Two double doubles; Kylie with 14 and 10 rebounds and Tee with 12 and 10. Renee had a monster game on both ends with nine steals & 22 points. I thought our post contributed nicely as well with Simone having seven points and seven rebounds."
The 'Cats are back in action when they travel to Roanoke for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday.
