GREENSBORO, N.C. - Randolph Women's Basketball traveled down to Guilford College for a mid-week ODAC match-up. The game was fairly even in the opening minutes, however, the Quakers topped the WildCats with a 77-52 victory.
Randolph is now to 7-8, 2-4 ODAC and Guilford moves to 11-4, 5-2 ODAC.
"Tough night on the road against a very good Guilford team," said head coach
Steve Lanpher. "I thought we handled their defensive pressure for the most part but didn't capitalize on our open opportunities."
Randolph opened the scoring early with a jumper from
Kylie Stark and then a quick response from Guilford evened the score at 2-2. Guilford then scored, adding two more layups and a jump shot to lead by six with 7:20 remaining in the quarter. The WildCats broke the streak and found a bucket from
Taniya Jackson to cut the deficit to four. The WildCats fought hard on defense to add a layup from
Simone Brown to put the score at 8-6, however, the Quakers on the opposite end added two layups pushing the lead to 12-6. Stark put the 'Cats back within one possession after draining a three-pointer at 3:20. The next bucket for the game in the quarter came with 38 seconds left with the Quakers converting two free throws, 14-9. In a quick transition,
Imani Hardin got to the basket for a layup, but Guilford closed out the quarter with a buzzer-beater three-pointer. The Quakers led 17-11.
"Defensively, we didn't do well off the dribble and they really hurt us on the offensive glass," said Lanpher. "27 offensive rebounds is way too many!"
Guilford converted on a pair of free throws two minutes into the second quarter to extend their lead and then added a layup for an 11-point lead, 21-11.
Maddie Pabon cut into the lead by adding a jumper, 21-13. Both teams exchanged turnovers, rebounds, and missed opportunities, highlighted by strong defensive sequences. Under 4:30 to go, the offensive rhythms for both teams came back, with a layup from Guilford and on the other end a layup from
Lexanna Oge, 24-15. Each team added a free throw to continue their offensive battle and an even 5-5 run closed out the quarter with the Quakers leading 30-22.
The offensive battle continued into the third quarter opening with a layup from Guilford, a jumper from Jackson, and a three-pointer from Pabon to put Randolph down by five, 32-27. Guilford responded with a three-pointer not too long after, but
Teniyah Crenshaw-Patterson quickly transitioned into a layup for the 'Cats with 6:43 to go. The Quakers would then go on a 22-2 run to extend their lead to 57-31 with eight seconds remaining in the quarter.
Trying to cut into Guilford's lead, a three-pointer from Pabon set the scene for the fourth quarter and teammate
Brooklyn Finnerty got the defensive rebound on the other end to lead to a layup for Randolph. A 12-5 run from the Quakers kept them in control with a 28-point lead before the halfway point. The WildCats continue to push to narrow the score with Crenshaw-Patterson getting the "and-1" and Stark hitting a three-pointer off a Guilford turnover. The Quakers were not letting off the gas and responded with a quick layup. At 3:34, Stark hit another three-pointer and on the other end the Quakers hit one of their own, 75-50, Quakers lead. The remaining minutes of the quarter saw
Cydney Bundy get the layup for Randolph and the Quakers add to their total with a layup. The last two minutes were scoreless and Guilford got the win.
"Kylie was solid once again with 13 pts and six rebounds," said Lanpher. "I thought Imani & CJ gave us some productive minutes off the bench as well."
Randolph went 20-64 from the field and 6-21 from behind the arc. The Quakers got the advantage in rebounds, 55-40. Stark led the way with 13 points adding six defensive rebounds and three assists. She shot 5-14 from the field and 3-7 (42.9%) from the three-point line. Pabon was not too far behind with 10 points going 2-5 from the three-point range. Other contributors included Crenshaw-Patterson with eight and Jackson with six. Brown had seven rebounds for the WildCats.
"We've got to continue to learn and improve," said Lanpher. "The ODAC can be very unforgiving, especially on the road."
The 'Cats head to Randolph-Macon for a 2 p.m. match-up on Saturday.
