Softball Drops Two Close Games to Roanoke

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph softball team hosted Roanoke in an ODAC doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. Both games were close as the Maroons won by scores of 3-1 and 3-2.

Randolph's record stands at 6-16 overall and 2-6 in the conference.

In the first game, Roanoke struck first with a run in the first inning. The WildCats would tie it up in the fourth inning on a Lexi Hawkins' (Lynchburg, Va./Liberty Christian) RBI sac bunt.

It was a 1-1 game until the Maroon sixth inning when Kate Houle hit a solo homerun to centerfield to put RC ahead 2-1. The Maroons added another run on a RBI lineout.

Emily Morris (Esmont, Va./Monticello) pitched all seven innings in the circle for the WildCats. She allowed three runs (two earned) on nine hits, walked four, and struck out four.

Dominique Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County HS) was 2-for-3 with a triple, a run scored, and a stolen base. Hawkins finished 1-for-2 with a RBI.

In the second game, Roanoke once again led 1-0 after the top of the first inning. A Lacey Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) RBI single in the bottom portion of the inning tied the game at 1-1.

Randolph took the lead in the third inning. Another Hawkins sacrifice bunt allowed Irving to score.

The WildCat lead lasted until the sixth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Shaniya Lewis was hit by a pitch to let a run come home. Molly Epperson singled in a run to put the visitors ahead 3-2.

After some great defense prevented Roanoke to add to its lead in the seventh, Randolph came up in the bottom half. Austyn Moran (Troutville, Va./James River HS) reached on an error and after Michaela Williams (Appomattox, Va./Appomattox) popped out to the catcher, Maddie Carroll (Blue Ridge, Va./Lord Botetourt) reached on an error to put two on. Jenna McDermott (Townsend, Del./Middletown HS) laid down a bunt to move the runners to second and third base. Irving was intentionally walked to load the bases. Lucado, however, fouled out to second base and the game was over.

Moran went the full seven innings for the WildCats. She gave up three runs on 13 hits, walked two, and struck out two. She went 1-for-3 at the plate.

Irving was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Lucado and Hawkins both brought in a run each.

Randolph hosts Lynchburg this coming Wednesday. Game time will be at 2:00 for the first game of the doubleheader.
