LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph softball team hosted Eastern Mennonite on Saturday afternoon in what was the WildCats' Senior Day and their regular season home finale. The 'Cats came away with their first sweep of the season as they defeated the Royals 3-2 in Game 1 and 8-1 in the second game.
Randolph's overall record improves to 11-23 and 7-13 in ODAC play.
The WildCat led 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning. Chesney Shook's (Advance, N.C./Davie County HS) sacrifice fly scored one run and Dominique Irving's (Amherst, Va./Amherst County HS) RBI single scored the second run.
The Royals scored once each in the third and fourth innings. The game would remain tied going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Emily Morris (Esmont, Va/Monticello) singled to right field to lead off and then stole second base. Shook singled to left field and advanced on the throw which allowed Morris to move to third base. Jenna McDermott (Townsend, Del./Middletown HS) hit a short fly ball to left field that was caught. Morris tagged up and beat the throw to score the winning run for the WildCats.
Morris pitched all seven innings in the circle. She allowed two runs on four hits, walked three, and struck out two. At the plate, she went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.
Kylie Stark (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) was 2-for-2 with a run scored. Irving and Lexi Hawkins (Lynchburg, Va./Liberty Christian) were both 1-for-3.
In the second game, Maddie Carroll's (Blue Ridge, Va./Lord Botetourt) RBI double put the WildCats ahead 1-0. Randolph added runs in the third inning on a Hawkin's RBI single and a Carroll RBI single to lead 3-0.
Eastern Mennonite scored once in the fourth inning to cut the Randolph lead to 3-1. The WildCats answered with a three-run bottom of the fourth to go ahead 6-1. The 'Cats would go on to score twice more in the sixth inning.
Austyn Moran (Troutville, Va./James River HS) pitched her fourth consecutive complete game. She allowed just one run on five hits and struck out a season-high four batters.
McDermott was 3-for-4 with four runs scored. Irving hit 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. Hawkins went 3-for-4 with four RBI. Carroll was 2-for-2 with two RBI.
Randolph closes out its regular season tomorrow at Shenandoah. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m.
