Softball Splits At Ferrum

FERRUM, Va.- The Randolph softball team travelled to Ferrum on Saturday afternoon. The WildCats dropped a heartbreaker 5-4 in eight innings in the first game but rebounded for a resounding 11-3 win over the Panthers in the second game.

In the first game, Randolph fell behind 3-0 after the first three innings of play. In the fourth inning. Emily Morris (Esmont, Va,/Monticello) led off with a single and Kyle Stark (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) doubled down the third base line. After Addy Compton (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) struck out, Lacey Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) reached on an error and moved all to way to third which allowed Morris and Stark to score to make it 3-2.

The Panther scored once in the fifth inning. The WildCats scored twice in the seventh inning to tie the game up at 4-4. In the Ferrum bottom of the eighth inning, Breanna Weaver singled in the winning run.

Morris pitched 7 1/3 innings for the WildCats. She allowed five runs (three earned) on 12 hits, walking three, and striking out two. At the plate, she batted 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Desiree Scott (Reva, Va./Eastern View) had a pinch-hit double. Dominique Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Lexi Hawkins (Lynchburg, Va./Liberty Christian) was 1-for-3 with a RBI. Stark went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

In the second game, Randolph scored runs in the first, second, third and fourth innings. With the 'Cats ahead 3-0 in the third inning, Austyn Moran (Troutville, Va./James River HS) hit a double to right centerfield to score two runs for her first RBIs of the season to give Randolph a 5-0 lead.

The Panthers closed the gap in their portion of the third inning with three runs to make it a 5-3 contest. The WildCats scored once on a Scott RBI single and a RBI by Lucado, when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, to increase their lead to 7-3. RBI singles by Chesney Shook (Advance, N.C./Davie County) and Jenna McDermott (Townsend, Del./Middletown) scored runs in the sixth inning and Delaney Sipes (Arrington, Va./Amherst County HS) hit a two-run single up the middle in the seventh inning.

Moran pitched all seven innings in the circle. She allowed three unearned runs on five hits, walked one, and struck out three. At the plate, she had a three-hit performance with two RBI and one run scored.

Scott was also 3-for-5 with a run scored, a run batted in, and a stolen base. McDermott finished 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and three RBI. Lucado was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a RBI. Hawkins went 2-for-3 with a run scored, a RBI, and her first stolen base of the season. Lainey Mutter (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) had a pinch-hit double.

Randolph hosts the current #13 Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday afternoon. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 2:30 p.m.
