GREENSBORO, N.C. The Randolph softball team traveled to Guilford to take on the Quakers for an ODAC doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. The WildCats were shut out in the first game 3-0 but the offense erupted in the second game as Randolph won Game 2 by the score of 11-3.
The WildCats' overall record now stands at 8-20 and 4-10 in ODAC play.
In the second game, Randolph got out ahead right away. With runners and first and second and one out, Maddie Carroll (Blue Ridge, Va./Lord Botetourt) reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Jenna McDermott (Townsend, Del./Middletown) to score to put the 'Cats ahead 1-0.
Guilford took the lead back in its portion of the second inning as Faith Fennell hit a three-run homer to right centerfield. In the WildCat third inning, Lexi Hawkins (Lynchburg, Va./Liberty Christian) reached on a fielding error that allowed McDermott to score as Randolph made it a 3-2 game. The WildCats took the lead back in the top of the fourth inning as Kylie Stark (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) led off with a home run to left centerfield. Later in the inning, McDermott singled and moved to second base on an error by the Quaker right fielder which let Michaela Wiliams (Appomattox, Va./Appomattox) score to make it a 5-3 game.
The WildCats scored two more runs in the fifth to increase their lead to 6-3. Randolph plated a run in the sixth inning on a Lacey Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) RBI single. The 'Cats tacked on four runs in the seventh inning. Carroll had a RBI single, Delaney Sipes (Arrington, Va./Amherst County HS) hit a two-run pinch hit single, and Desiree Scott (Reva, Va./Eastern View) delivered a RBI double.
Austyn Moran (Troutville, Va./James River HS) went all seven innings in the circle for Randolph. She allowed three runs on 10 hits, walked one, and struck out one batter.
Carroll went 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored. Irving was also 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. Lucado batted 3-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI. McDermott went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored. Addy Compton (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) was 2-for-4 and scored one run.
In the first game, the WildCats had five hits and left five runners on base. Dominique Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County), Hawkins, and Emily Morris (Esmont, Va./Monticello) were all 1-for-3. Lucado and Chesney Shook (Advance, N.C./Davie County) were both 1-for-2.
Morris pitched all six innings. She allowed three runs on seven hits and walked three.
Randolph travels to Ferrum on Saturday. The ODAC doubleheader begins at 2:00 p.m.
