DANVILLE, Va.- The Randolph softball team faced Averett on the road on Saturday afternoon. The WildCats split the doubleheader as they dropped the first game 3-1 and won the second game by the same score.
In the first game, Averett scored twice in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. In the WildCat third inning, Lexi Hawkins (Lynchburg, Va./Liberty Christian) singled in a run to make it 2-1. The Cougars got the run back in their portion of the inning.
Austyn Moran (Troutville, Va./James River HS) went all six innings in the circle for Randolph. She allowed three runs on nine hits, walking two, and striking out two.
Jenna McDermott (Townsend, Del./Middletown HS) was 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, and a run scored. Hawkins finished 2-for-3 with a RBI.
In the second game, it was scoreless through three innings. In the Randolph fourth inning, Hawkins singled with one out. Lacey Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) doubled down the left field line with two outs to move Hawkins to third base. Kylie Stark (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) then came out and delivered a double to left centerfield to score both Hawkins and Lucado to give the WildCats a 2-0 lead.
Averett got one run back in the bottom of the fourth inning. The score remained 2-1 until the top of the seventh when Maddie Carroll (Blue Ridge, Va./Lord Botetourt) singled in a run to give the 'Cats a 3-1 lead. Starting pitcher Emily Morris (Esmont, Va./Monticello) picked up three straight outs in the bottom of the seventh to register the victory.
Morris gave up just one run on five hits. She walked two and struck out one. At the plate, she was 1-for-3.
Stark was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBI. Lucado went 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored. McDermott hit 1-for-4 as did Dominique Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County). Irving also scored a run and stole a base.
Randolph travels to Guilford on Tuesday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 3:00 p.m.
