RALEIGH, N.C.- The Randolph softball team played SUNY New Paltz and William Peace as part of the Grand Slam Triangle Classic on Friday. The WildCats fell to the Hawks 9-1 in the first game and 7-4 to the Pacers in the second contest.
Against the Hawks, Randolph was held to two hits. The WildCats' lone run came in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Zoe Watson's (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) sac bunt allowed Rachel Arce (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) to score.
In the circle, Austyn Moran (Troutville, Va./James River) went 5 1/3 innings allowed eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits. She walked one and struck out one batter. Delaney Sipes (Arrington, Va./Amherst County) pitched 1/3 of an inning and surrendered one run on one hit.
In the second game against William Peace, it was scoreless until the Pacers scored once in the top of the third inning. The WildCats went ahead in their portion of the third on a Lexi Hawkins' (Lynchburg, Va./Liberty Christian) two-single to right field.
WPU jumped ahead in the following inning with five runs to go up 6-2. The 'Cats made it 6-3 in the bottom half on Addy Compton's (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest HS) RBI single. The Pacers plated a run in fifth inning. The WildCats scored a run on an error by the Pacers' shortstop that allowed Compton to score.
Emily Morris (Esmont, Va./Monticello) pitched 3 2/3 innings in the circle for Randolph. She allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits, walking five, and striking out one. Sipes pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up four runs (one earned) on two hits. She walked seven.
Compton was 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and a RBI. Hawkins was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Lacey Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) went 1-for-3. Dominque Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) hit 1-for-4 and scored a run. Kylie Stark (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) batted 1-for-2 and also scored a run.
Randolph's next scheduled doubleheader is at home this coming Wednesday March 13 against Maryville College. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 12:00 p.m.
