LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Randolph men's lacrosse team was back on the field as it hosted Bethany on Monday evening at WildCat Stadium. The WildCat defense held off the Bison attack late in the fourth quarter as Randolph held on to defeat Bethany 11-10.
Leyton Brightly (Spotsylvania, Va./James Monroe) got it going for Randolph with his first goal of the night 1:15 into the first quarter. The Bison scored twice within a minute to lead 2-1 at the 8:32 mark. Brightly tied it up 32 seconds for the 'Cats. It was a 3-3 game at the conclusion of the period.
The two teams exchanged goals in the second period as the score was knotted at 6-6 at halftime. In the third quarter, Randolph scored three straight times to pull away from the Bison and lead 9-7. Bethany tied it up early on in the fourth quarter. Back-to-back goals from Michael Baldwin (Culpepper, Va./Liberty HS) gave the WildCats an 11-9 lead with under 10 minutes left to play. Bethany scored with 4:12 left to pull within one score. Randolph forced a pair of turnovers including one with under 10 seconds remaining to clinch the game and were able to withstand a man-down situation as it killed off a penalty.
The WildCats led in total shots 48-39 and in groundball pickups 29-18.
Brightly finished with four goals and two assists along with four groundballs. Baldwin scored three times as did Nathan Pradachith (Alexandria, Va./Edison) which was a career high for him. Pradachith also scooped up six groundballs and was 10-of-13 on faceoffs. Chase Callan (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) scored once and dished out four assists.
Tom Stahler (Johannesburg, South Africa/Middle Township) had a team-high eight groundballs and was 6-of-10 on faceoffs. Adam Ulffers (Greenville, N.C./J.H. Rose HS) stopped 14 shots in the goal and came up with four groundballs.
Randolph hosts Husson on Wednesday afternoon. Game time will be at 4:00 p.m.
