Softball Splits at Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, VA.- The Randolph softball team played an ODAC doubleheader at Bridgewater on Saturday. The WildCats split on the day as they won 8-5 in the first game and dropped the second game 8-6.

Randolph's overall record now stands at 6-14 and 2-4 in conference play.

The WildCats got the scoring started in the first game in the first inning as Dominique Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) legged out an inside the park homerun, the fourth of her career and her first in two years, to give Randolph a 1-0 lead. The Eagles took the lead back with a pair of runs in the bottom portion of the inning.

Randolph tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning as Kylie Stark (Lynchburg. Va./Brookville) reached on a fielder's choice to score a run. In the fifth inning, Chesney Shook (Advance, N.C./Davie County HS) led off with a walk. Jenna McDermott (Townsend, Del./Middletown HS) reached on an error by the Eagle shortstop that moved Shook to third base. Lacey Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) singled up the middle and advanced to second on the throw that scored both Shook and McDermott to put the WildCats ahead 4-2. Irving singled. Maddie Carroll (Blue Ridge, Va./Lord Botetourt) reached on a fielding error by the Bridgewater centerfielder to score Lucado. A Lexi Hawkins (Lynchburg, Va./Liberty Christian) groundout moved the runners up one base. Emily Morris (Esmont, Va./Monticello) laid down a sac bunt to score Irving. Stark singled in a run to give the 'Cats a 7-2 lead.

Bridgewater scored twice in the fifth to close the score to 7-4. Randolph got a run back in the sixth as a throwing error by the Eagle pitcher allowed Shook to score. Bridgewater tried to rally with a run in the seventh inning on a two-out RBI double by Delaney Lail but Morris was able to get Kaelyn Ramsey to fly out to end the game.

Morris pitched all seven innings in the circle for the WildCats. She allowed five runs (three earned) on nine hits, walked two, and struck out two.

Irving went 2-for-5 at the plate with her homerun, two runs scored, and a RBI. McDermott was 2-for-5 with a run scored. She stole two bases. Hawkins hit 2-for-4 with a double. Stark was 1-for-4 with a stolen base and two RBI.

In the second game, Bridgewater led 1-0 after the first inning. The 'Cats scored three times in the third inning on a McDermott RBI single and a Hawkins two-run single to go up 3-1.

The Eagles took the lead in the fourth inning with three runs to go ahead 4-3. BC's four-run fifth inning increased its lead to 8-3.

Randolph needed to rally in the seventh inning. Desiree Scott (Reva, Va./Eastern View) led off with a double to right field. After the WildCats got two outs, Lucado singled to move Scott to third base. Michaela Williams (Appomattox, Va./Appomattox) singled to center field to score Scott. Zoe Watson (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) pinch hit a single to right field that scored Lucado. Amanda Lawhorn (Rustburg, Va./Rustburg HS) pinched hit and singled up the middle to score Williams. With the go-ahead run at the plate, Morris flied out to right field to end the game.

Austyn Moran (Troutville, Va./James River HS) pitched 4 2/3 innings in the circle. She gave up eight runs on 13 hits, walked two, and struck out one. Delaney Sipes (Arrington, Va./Amherst County) pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief and allowed just two hits.

Scott was 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored as was Lucado. McDermott went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and a RBI. Hawkins hit 1-for-3 with two RBI. Shook was 1-for-2 with a run scored and a stolen base.

Randolph travels to Mary Baldwin on Wednesday. Game time is at 1:00 p.m.
