Softball Splits at Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C.- The Randolph softball team traveled to Greensboro to face the Pride on Saturday afternoon. The WildCats split the doubleheader as they dropped the first game 5-1 and won the second game by the same score 5-1.

In the first game, the Pride led 5-0 after three innings. Randolph did not record its first hit of the game until Dominique Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) led off the fourth with a single. After stealing second base, she would eventually score on Lainey Mutter's (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) single to centerfield to make it a 5-1 game.

Starting pitcher Paige Scruggs (Cowpens, S.C./Chesnee) went five innings in the circle. She allowed five runs on five hits. She walked four and struck out two. Emily Morris (Esmont, Va./Monticello) came in for one scoreless inning of relief.

Irving went 1-for-2 with a stolen base and a run scored. Mutter was 1-for-3 with a RBI.

In the second game, Lacey Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) led off with a single, stole second base, and then advanced to third base. Irving laced a triple to right centerfield to score Lucado. After Jenna McDermott (Townsend, Del./Middletown HS) lined out to shortstop, Mutter doubled to score Irving but was thrown out at third base trying to leg out a triple.

In the second inning, Bethany Martz (Grottoes, Va./East Rockingham) doubled to right centerfield to score a run and give the WildCats a 3-0 lead. A Mutter single in the third inning scored Randolph's fourth run. With the bases loaded and no outs, Kylie Stark (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) flied out to right field which allowed Mutter to tag up and score to make it 5-0 WildCats.

Greensboro scored its only run in the fifth inning. Morris went the distance for the 'Cats as she allowed one run on six hits with no walks and she struck out on batter.
