LYNCHBURG, VA- The Randolph men's lacrosse team hosted Oglethorpe at a bright and sunny WildCat Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Stormy Petrels came out on top on the day as they won by the score of 16-12.
The WildCats led 5-4 at the end of the first quarter. Bruce Patterson's (Fork Union, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) goal less than a minute into the second quarter put Randolph ahead 6-4. Oglethorpe scored four straight times to go up 8-6 with 8:23 remaining in the period. The 'Cats pulled to within one goal at 8-7 but the Stormy Petrels rattled off two straight scores to lead 10-7 at halftime.
Just three total goals were scored in the third quarter with Oglethorpe leading 12-8. The Stormy Petrels led by as many as five goals, 14-9, with 9:04 remaining to play. The WildCats closed to within three goals, 15-12, with just over four minutes left to play. Oglethorpe held Randolph to one shot in four minutes of game time and added one more score with 43 seconds left for good measure.
The WildCats led in total shots 44-36. Leyton Brightly (Spotsylvania, Va./James Monroe) scored a career-high four goals and assisted on three others. He also picked up five groundballs and caused two turnovers. Michael Baldwin (Culpepper, Va./Liberty HS) tallied three goals. Chase Callan (Fredericksburg, Va.) netted two goals and assisted on two. Patterson finished with two goals and one assist. Tom Stahler (Johannesburg, South Africa/Middle Township (NJ) scored once.
Adam Ulffers (Greenville, N.C./J.H. Rose HS) stopped 12 shots in the cage.
Randolph hosts Bethany College on Monday evening. Game time will be at 7:00 p.m.
