Softball Splits with Southern Virginia

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph softball team hosted Southern Virginia in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. Both games were decided by one run with the Knights taking the first game 7-6 and Randolph winning the second game 11-10.

The WildCats' overall record stands at 4-8. Southern Virginia is 2-8.

In the first game, Randolph led 3-0 in the second inning. Kylie Stark (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) singled in a run. Chesney Shook (Advance, N.C./Davie County HS) reached on a fielder's choice to score another run and Stark scored the third run on a wild pitch.

The Knights took the lead with a five-run third inning. The WildCats knotted the score at 5-5 with a run scored on a Desiree Scott (Reva, Va./Eastern View) sacrifice fly and Lacey Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) scoring on a wild pitch.

The lead swung back to Southern Virginia in the fourth inning as the Knights scored once to go ahead 6-5. The WildCats tied it up again on a Lucado sacrifice fly in the fifth inning. The Knights scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning.

Emily Morris (Esmont, Va./Monticello) pitched five innings in the circle for the 'Cats. She allowed seven runs (six earned) on six hits, walked four, and struck out three. Austyn Moran (Troutville, Va./James River HS) went two innings in relief allowing one hit.

Stark was 2-for-3 with a double, a stolen base, a run scored, and a RBI. Jenna McDermott (Townsend, Del./Middletown HS) finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and pair of stolen bases. Lucado and Scott both went 1-for-2 with a run scored and a RBI. Lucado stole one base. Dominique Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) batted 1-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base.

In the second game, the Knights led 1-0 after the first inning. Randolph tied it on a Shook RBI single in the second inning. The WildCats plated five runs in the third inning. Irving singled to score one run, Lexi Hawkins (Lynchburg, Va./Liberty Christian) reached on a fielder's choice to score another run, Stark hit a RBI double, and Shook singled in two runs.

The Knights scored seven runs in the fourth inning to take an 8-6 lead. Randolph answered with a five-run bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded and no outs, Maddie Carroll (Blue Ridge, Va./Lord Botetourt) singled to left field. She would advance all the way to third base on the throw that allowed three runs to come home. Rachel Arce (Stafford, Va./Mountain View HS) then laced a pinch-hit single to right field to score Carroll. A Stark groundout to third base let a fifth run score as Randolph took an 11-8 lead.

Southern Virginia scored once in the fifth inning to make it an 11-9 game. With two outs in the seventh inning, the Knights scored once to make it a one-run contest. Relief pitcher Delaney Sipes (Arrington, Va./Amherst County HS) was able to get the last out to secure the victory for the 'Cats.

Moran went five innings in the circle for Randolph to pick up the victory. She allowed nine runs on 12 hits, walked one, and struck out one. Sipes pitched the last two innings to notch the save and let up one unearned run on two hits as she struck out one batter.

Shook finished 2-for-3 with three RBI. McDermott went 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, and two runs scored. Irving batted 2-for-3, scoring a run, and stealing two bags. Lucado had a double and scored two runs. Stark also had a double, two RBI, and one run scored. Carroll was 1-for-2 with three RBI and one run scored.

Randolph travels to Mary Washington next Wednesday. Game time from Fredericksburg will be at 2:00 pm.
