LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's tennis team hosted Grove City in their spring home opener on Saturday afternoon. The match was played at Crosswhite Athletic Club. The WildCats defeated the Wolverines 5-4.
Randolph was ahead 2-1 after doubles play. The pair of Jacob Martin and Ondra Pelda (Prague, Check Republic) defeated the duo of Gavin Miller and Josiah Newton 8-3 at first doubles. Andrea Mulner (Brasnov, Romania) and Dev Mani (Bangalore, India/St. Claret PU College) were 8-4 winners at second doubles over Benjamin Jones and Coller Kaufman. Third doubles was a close match with the pair of Jose Leon and Jameson Sposato edging out Jason Duval and Angelo De Asis (Clayton, N.C./Cleveland HS) 8-7.
In the singles portion, Mulner was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Newton at second singles. Pelda defeated Miller 6-2, 6-3 at third singles. The deciding match came at fifth singles as Mani held off Leon 6-4, 7-5.
"Great way to start our spring season for the men's team," said head coach Sam Martinez. We played a tough Grove City team who never went away after being down 3-1 in the match. I'm really happy with how our energy was positive and confident in the doubles. Big shoutout to our captain Dev for earning the clinching victory in singles."
Randolph hosts its ODAC opener this coming Wednesday against Ferrum. The match starts at 2:00 p.m.
