VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.- The Randolph women's basketball team traveled to Virginia Wesleyan to take on the Marlins on Saturday. The WildCats led from start to finish as they defeated the Marlins 58-40.
Randolph improves to 14-9 overall and 8-9 in the ODAC. The Marlins drop to 3-20 overall and 1-15 in the conference.
The WildCats scored the first eight points of the first quarter to lead 8-0. Randolph would go on to lead 16-4 at the end of the quarter.
The Marlins started the second quarter on a 6-2 run to close to within eight points, 18-10, with under six minutes left on the clock. Randolph ended the quarter on an 11-2 run to take a 29-12 lead at halftime.
Randolph upped its advantage to 22 points to start the third quarter. The Marlins were able to bring their deficit down to 14 points, 45-31, early in the fourth quarter but that would be as close as they would as the WildCats went ahead by as much as 23 points as they cruised to victory.
The WildCats shot 24-of-60 (40%) overall and were 4-of-15 (26.7%) from behind the three-point arc. The Marlins were 15-of-49 (30.6%) from the field and 4-of-17 (23.5%) in three-point attempts. Randolph led in rebounds 42-31. The WildCats led in points off turnovers 21-14, bench points 18-12, and points in the paint 34-14.
Teniyah Crenshaw-Patterson (Newport News, Va./Heritage) had a double-double effort with a team-high 14 points and 11 rebounds. She also dished out three assists and had three steals. Kylie Stark (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) finished with 13 points, four rebounds, and two steals. Jessica Jennings (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) finished with seven points, four assists, and three steals.
"Road wins are always special in the ODAC," said head coach Steve Lanpher after the game. "I thought our defensive pressure forced Va. Wes into some early shots and we were able to force them into turnovers at times which got our offense going. Teniyah played a great all-around game and was active on both ends."
Randolph hosts Washington and Lee on Wednesday evening. Game time from Giles Gymnasium will be at 7:00 p.m.
