Phillips-McLoyd Reaches 1,000 Career Points; Men’s Basketball Outlasts Shenandoah 86-80

WINCHESTER, Va- The Randolph men's basketball team went on the road on Wednesday evening for a midweek ODAC tilt with Shenandoah. The WildCats saw their double-digit lead go down to single digits in the second half but held off the Hornets in the end as they won 86-80.

The win improves Randolph's overall record to 5-1 and 1-1 in the ODAC. The victory breaks a four-game winless streak to the Hornets. Shenandoah drops to 3-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Jordan Phillips-McLoyd (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) sank a three-point basket with 7:37 remaining in the second half. That gave him 12 points in the game and moved him past 1,000 for his career. He finished with 18 points, six assists, and six rebounds.

The two teams were almost neck and neck for nearly half of the first period. Randolph had a 31-24 lead with under nine minutes remaining in the half. It was still a seven-point lead, 34-27, almost a minute later, and soon the WildCat lead was 11 points, 42-31, with 5:22 showing on the clock. The Hornets would make it a two-possession game, 42-36, with just over four minutes left until halftime. Randolph would end the half on a 9-0 run and lead 51-36 at the break.

In the second half, the WildCats pushed their lead to 17 points three times early on in the period. The 'Cats maintained a double-digit advantage for a majority of the half and were ahead 78-61 as late as 5:23 left in regulation. A 15-4 run by Shenandoah, however, brought the Randolph lead down to six points, 82-76, with 45 ticks left. The WildCats pushed ahead with free throws by Phillips-McLoyd and the Hornets came back to within six points but it was too late as Randolph fended off the Shenandoah comeback bid.

The WildCats shot 50% (34-of-68) overall from the floor and were good on 40.7% (11-of-27) of its three-point shots. The teams were even in the rebounding battle 40-40. Randolph got a big lift from its bench with 36 points to just 14 for Shenandoah.

Landon Wagoner (Martinsville, Va./Carlisle School) led the WildCats with 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting. He secured nine rebounds. Timothy James Jr. (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) added 10 points.

Randolph returns home to host #17 Guilford this Saturday at Giles Gymnasium. Game time will be at 2:00 p.m.
