Women's Basketball Strong Second Half Secures Victory over UMW, 56-43

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Randolph College women's basketball delivered a balanced offensive and defensive performance to defeat Mary Washington, 56-43, on Wednesday evening. Strong contributions from both starters and the bench helped the WildCats dominate key moments and maintain control throughout the game.

"Really proud of our effort and grit tonight," said Randolph head coach Steve Lanpher. "Mary Washington was a very physical team and I thought we outbattled them."

Randolph led, 28-22, to Mary Washington in a competitive first half. The WildCats started strong, led by Kylie Stark's 10 points, including a three-pointer and two key fastbreak plays in the second quarter. Maddie Pabon contributed with two crucial three-pointers, helping close a deficit late in the second quarter. Despite the Eagles efforts, Randolph maintained control through consistent scoring.

"Offensively, we started a little slow and defensively we allowed their post players some early baskets in the first, " said Lanpher. "However, we adjusted defensively and held them to 29 points in the last three quarters."

In the second half, the WildCats maintained control, outscoring the Eagles 28-21 with key contributions from their bench and strong defensive play. Taniya Jackson's fastbreak layups and Stark's accuracy at the free-throw line highlighted the third quarter, while Pabon sealed the fourth quarter with consecutive three-pointers, extending the lead. Despite a late push by Mary Washington, Randolph's balanced scoring and defensive rebounds secured a double-digit victory.

"Taniya was very efficient and was so active on defense with five steals. Offensively, as a whole we moved the ball around efficiently and were very unselfish," said Lanpher. "Teniyah was assertive on both ends and Kylie made great decisions all night and led us with 18 points.

Stark led the way with 18 points, including three three-pointers, while adding three assists and two steals. Pabon was electric off the bench, scoring 15 points on a near-perfect shooting performance, hitting 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. Teniyah Crenshaw-Patterson provided a steady inside presence with 12 points and six rebounds, showcasing her versatility on both ends of the floor.

Randolph's defense was a major factor, forcing 22 turnovers and recording 12 steals, which translated to 24 points off turnovers. The WildCats' ability to disrupt the Eagles offense was evident, as the Eagles struggled to find rhythm, particularly from long range, going 0-14 from three-point territory.

"We take a lot of pride in our defense and to limit them to 43 points is a true testament to our focus and effort," said Lanpher.

The 'Cats are back on Saturday against Carolina at home at 2:00 p.m.
