BUENA VISTA, Va.- The Randolph women's tennis team played its sole dual match of the fall season on Wednesday as they faced Southern Virginia. The WildCats trailed 1-0 after doubles play but came back to win four of six singles matches as they held off Southern Virginia 4-3.
The Knights won two matches in doubles play to take the point. Randolph's second doubles dup of Emma Bauer (Munich, Germany) and Fleur Gaalman won 6-3 over Remly Fry and Lia Savage.
In singles play, Bauer defeated Fry 6-3, 6-1 at fourth singles. Lize Van Veen (Harderwijk, The Netherlands) won 6-0, 6-1 over Lydia Delich at second singles. Gaalman was down 3-4 in the second set in her third singles match against Jillian Arnold. She won a critical deuce point to make it 4-4 on her way to a 6-4 set win after taking the first set 6-2. Lena Kersten (Bonn, Germany) trailed 0-3 in the first set in her match against Paula Snelson and then 4-5 coming back to take the set 7-6 and winning the next set 6-4 to clinch the match for the WildCats.
"So proud of the team and how they competed in adversity after being down 1-0 after doubles," said head coach Sam Martinez. "The trio of First Years stepped up when we needed them and for Lena to clinch the match against one of the best seniors in our regions, makes it a great day."
