Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer falls to Virginia Wesleyan in Tight Conference Battle, 1-2

LYNCHBURG, Va. - In a tightly contested and physical match, the WildCats fall to the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan, 1-2.

The first half was leveled for both teams defensively and offensively. The Marlins had five corner kicks to Randolph's three. Both teams held each other to less than five shots in the first half, the Marlins led 4-2. In the 18th minute, Virginia Wesleyan Nolan Schulte, assisted by Everett McCloskey found the back of the net to put the first point on the board. Randolph quickly looking for an equalizer pushed its offense, and it wasn't until late in the first half that the WildCats netted the equalizer from a well-placed cross from senior defender Colby Lambert off a Marlin defender to graduate student midfielder Cooper Sayles for the rebound to level the score, 1-1.

In the second half, the Marlins pushed the pace on the WildCats and senior goalkeeper Carter Kelly who faced five shots from Virginia Wesleyan and two corner kicks. Both teams looking for the game-winner kept up the pressure. However, the Marlins got a penalty kick and Nate Mitchell took the shot, passed Kelly, and into the net to put the Marlins up 2-1. Once again, the WildCats looked for the equalizer as the minutes wound down, but could not find the back of the net.

The Marlins outshot the WildCats 20-3 and was 9-3 for corner kicks.

The 'Cats are back at WildCat Stadium for an ODAC match-up against Hampden-Sydney on Saturday for Senior Day at 7 p.m.
