Women’s Basketball Roars Back to Defeat Marlins 59-43

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph women's basketball team hosted Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at Giles Gymnasium. The WildCats trailed at halftime but used a big third quarter effort to come back and defeat the Marlins 59-43.

Randolph improves to 11-6 overall and 5-6 in the ODAC. VWU drops to 3-14 and 1-10 in the conference.

Virgnia Wesleyan led 11-10 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, Randolph led 14-13 with 5:29 remaining in the period. The Marlins used an 8-2 run to close out the period and lead 21-16 at the break.

"We came out sluggish and to be honest seemed to take Virginia Wesleyan too lightly," said head coach Steve Lanpher after the game.  "Hats off to them as they controlled the tempo for much of the first half."

In the third quarter the WildCats quickly tied it up on a layup by Jessica Jennings (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) and a three-point basket by Cameron 'Neil (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester). That was part of an 11-2 run that put Randolph ahead 29-23 with under five minutes remaining in the quarter. The WIldCats ended the quarter on another 11-2 run to lead 40-27. Randolph easily was ahead in the fourth quarter as their lead was never threatened.

"I really liked our intensity and our defensive pressure in the 3rd quarter," said Lanpher.  "It allowed us to turn them over and create some easy opportunities."

Overall, the WildCats were 19-of-63 (30.2%) from the floor and just 3-of-19 (15.8%) from behind the three-point arc. At the free throw line, Randolph was 18-of-22 (81.8%) The Marlins were 17-of-44 (overall) and held to just 1-of-10 (10%) in three-point baskets made.

Randolph led in rebounds 41-37. The 'Cats outscored the Marlins 31-12 in points off turnovers and 19-4 in second chance points.

Jennings led the WildCats with 19 points on 7-of-17 shooting. Teniyah Crenshaw-Patterson (Newport News, Va./Heritage) added 14 points and nine rebounds. Kylie Stark (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) scored eight points.

I thought Tee played her best game since coming back as she was aggressive and rebounded the ball well," noted Lanpher. "We'll look to improve our consistency on both ends of the floor moving forward. However, ODAC WINS ARE always PRECIOUS SO we are happy to grab another one!"

Randolph travels to Washington and Lee on Wednesday. Game time is at 7:30 p.m. following the conclusion of the men's game.
