Volleyball Splits at First Day of Maroon Classic

Randolph played Hollins in its first match of the Maroon Classic hosted by Roanoke College on Friday. The WildCats won in four sets 3-1 (25-19, 25-5, 24-26, 31-29).

The 'Cats scored the first two points in the first set but Hollins came back to move ahead 5-3. HU would go on to lead 11-6. Randolph answered with a 12-0 run to overtake Hollins and lead 18-11. The WildCat lead then grew to 21-12. Hollins closed to within five points at 24-19 but a kill by Brooklyn Finnerty (Lynchburg, Va./Timberlake) gave Randolph the 25-19 set win.

The second set had Randolph leading 4-2 but the WildCats blew it open with a 15-1 run as the 'Cats handled HU 25-5.

Hollins had the upper hand on Randolph early on in the third set as it was ahead 6-4. The WildCats jumped ahead 12-9 until HU grabbed the lead back at 13-12. Randolph then went up 17-14 for its final lead in the frame as Hollins used a 7-0 run to lead 21-17. The WildCats were able to tie the score up twice but Hollins registered the last two points it needed to win the set 26-24.

Randolph led 11-9 in the fourth set. Hollins countered with an 11-4 run to go ahead 20-15. The WildCats tied the set at 21-21 and the two teams then traded points and six times was either team at match point. Randolph tied at 29-29 and then received kills by Finnerty and Grace Fulton (Staunton, Va./Riverheads) to finally put away HU.

Tahani Villines (Whittset, N.C./Williams) totaled 13 kills and seven digs for Randolph. Brooke Murdock (Evington, Va./Timberlake Christian) added nine kills and three block assists. Fulton led in digs with 13 and laid down four service aces. Mackenzie Woodson (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Collegiate) chipped in 11 digs, six kills, and three block assists. Madison Daniels (Warrenton, Va./Liberty) had 10 digs. Izzy Allen (Williamsburg, Va./Peninsula Catholic HS) led in assists with 15 with Jayda Domenech (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) adding 12 assists.

 The WildCats fell to Salem College 3-1 (20-25, 11-25, 25-22, 19-25) in their second match of the day.

In the first set, the Spirit had a lead of 10-3. Their lead stood at 14-7 but the WildCats went on a 7-1 run to close to 15-14. Salem upped its advantage to 20-15 and Randolph closed to within three points of tying but could not get closer as it fell 25-20.

It was a 6-5 match in the second set before Salem went on a 7-0 run to jump ahead 13-5. The Spirits stayed comfortably ahead for the remainder of the set as they won 25-11.
Randolph was behind 18-15 in the third set. Down 20-18, the WildCats used a 7-2 run to come back and claim the frame 25-22. In the fourth set, Salem led 14-9 but Randolph was able to close the game to within three points several times. The final time was at 22-19 but Salem scored the last three points it needed to take the set and the match.

Murdock led the team with 13 kills. Villines added nine kills while McKayla Padgett (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) added eight kills. Domenech contributed 19 assists and eight digs. Allen had 12 assists. Fulton paced the team with 23 digs.

Randolph continues competition tomorrow as it plays Methodist at 10 a.m. and North Carolina Wesleyan at 2:00 p.m.
