Second Half Comeback Falls Short for Women’s Lacrosse at Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C.- The Randolph women's lacrosse team traveled to North Carolina on Saturday to face Guilford in an ODAC matchup. The WildCats trailed by five goals in third quarter and narrowed their deficit to one but could not overtake the Quakers as Guilford would win 15-13.

Randolph won the opening draw and quickly made its way down the field and scored on an Olivia Richards' (Limestone, Tenn./Pinecrest) goal to lead 1-0 47 seconds into the contest. The Quakers scored five straight times to pull ahead 5-1 with 5:17 remaining in the period. GC led 7-3 at the conclusion of the quarter.

Trailing 8-3 at the beginning of the second quarter, goals by Sophia Cirone (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) and Richards closed the WildCat deficit to three goals at 8-5. Guilford led 11-7 at halftime.

The Quakers led 13-8 with 12:46 remaining in the third quarter. Randolph mounted its comeback as it scored four straight times to close to within one goal of tying, 13-12, with 1:22 to play in the third period. The Quakers scored with 42 seconds left on the clock to push their lead to 14-12.

Both teams scored once in the fourth quarter. The Quakers were held without a shot for the final 8:25 on the contest. Randolph got off three shots on goal but were turned away by Guilford keeper Zenna Carson.

The Quaker edged out the WildCats in total shots 32-31. Randolph did have 25 groundballs to Guilford's 19. The WildCats also caused 14 turnovers while the Quakers caused 12.

Richards led the WildCats with a career-high six goals. She also picked up four groundballs, caused four turnovers, and won three draws. Cirone tallied four goals and won seven draws along with causing two turnovers. Beverly Alcock (Purcellville, Va.) netted a hat trick.

Cristina Berenguer-Llongueras (Barcelona, Spain) caused three turnovers on the day. Mackenzie Woodson (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Collegiate) scooped up four groundballs and also dished out an assist. Yanessa Cabrera (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) led the team with five groundballs.

Taylor Batty (Hampton, Va./Kecoughtan) made 10 saves in the cage. She also picked up four groundballs.

Randolph travels to Ferrum on Wednesday. Game time is at 7:00 p.m.
