Second Half Run Pushes Ferrum to Win over Women’s Lacrosse

FERRUM, VA.- The Randolph women's lacrosse team travelled to Ferrum to take on the Panthers on Wednesday evening. The WildCats trailed by one at halftime but host Ferrun pulled away with a big run in the third quarter to come out with a 16-7 victory.

The score was tied 1-1 less than two minutes into the first quarter. Ferrum rattled off four straight goals to pull ahead 5-1. Yanessa Cabrera (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) ended the Panthers run with a solo score and FC added its sixth goal of the game to lead 6-2.

It was all Randolph in the second period as the WildCats put up three straight goals to make it 6-5 with 3:08 remaining in the quarter. Two scores came on the man advantage.
Ferrum came out strong to start the third quarter with two goals coming within 26 seconds of each other. The Panthers scored eight times to push their lead to 14-5.

Randolph did not score again until 8:48 remained in the fourth quarter on Beverly Alcock's (Purcellville, Va.) solo goal. Sophia Cirone (Stuart, Fla./South Fork) scored unassisted with 5:25 left to get the WildCats to within eight scores of tying but it was not enough in the end as Ferrum stayed out in front.

The Panthers led in total shots 35-21. Groundballs were in Randolph's favor 24-17.

Cirone led the team with three goals. She won five draws, caused two turnovers, and picked up two groundballs. Cabrera, Alcock, and Mackenzie Woodson (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Collegiate) all scored once. Cristina Berenguer-Llongueras (Barcelona, Spain) scored once and assisted on a second goal.

Taylor Batty (Hampton, Va./Kecoughtan) led in groundballs with seven. She had 15 saves in the cage.

Randolph hosts Averett this Sunday. Game time is at 1:00 p.m.
