LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph women's lacrosse team hosted Averett on Sunday for Senior Day. The teams played a close first quarter but the visiting Cougars pulled away from the WIldCats with a big second quarter run on their way to a 23-9 victory.
It was Randolph that scored first as
Olivia Richards (Limestone, Tenn./Pinecrest) converted on a free position attempt just over 30 seconds into the game. Averett scored three goals in a row to go up 3-1 with 10:21 remaining in the opening period. The WildCats tied it up with goals by
Sophia Cirone (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) and
Beverly Alcock (Purcellville, Va.) as the score stood at 3-3 with 7:06 showing on the game clock. A 4-2 AU run to close out the period put the visitors up 7-5.
It was all Averett in the second quarter as it outscored Randolph 8-1 and led 15-6 at halftime.
The Cougars led in total shots 40-18. Averett had a slight advantage in groundballs 16-14.
Cirone led the WildCats with three goals. She picked up three groundballs, caused two turnovers, and won 10 draws. Richards tallied two goals on the day. She was 2-for-2 on free position attempts. Alcock and
Yanessa Cabrera (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) both had one goal and one assist each along with two groundballs and two draws won.
Mackenzie Woodson (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Collegiate) and
Maddie Friel (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) both scored once.
Cristina Berenguer-Llongueras (Barcelona, Spain) had one assist.
Taylor Batty (Hampton, Va./Kecoughtan) totaled 11 saves in goal for Randolph.
Prior to the game, seniors Batty, Richards, Berenguer-Llongueras, Cabrera,
Natalia Hernandez-Berrios (Alexandria, Va./Rock Ridge) and
Thao Ho (Chicago, IL) were recognized.
Randolph hosts its final game of the season on Wednesday as the WildCats face Virginia Wesleyan. Game time will be at 4:00 p.m.
