Men’s Lacrosse Holds Off Ferrum 10-8 For First ODAC Win of the Season

FERRUM, Va.- The Randolph men's lacrosse team played its penultimate game on Wednesday afternoon as it traveled to Ferrum for an ODAC contest. The WildCats secured their first conference win of the year as they defeated the Panthers 10-8.

The victory is just the second ever over for the WildCats over the Panthers since the two teams first played in 2011. It is the first win over Ferrum for Randolph since 2016 and the first win on FC's home turf.

A penalty on the Panthers in the first period gave the WildCats a man-up opportunity. Randolph was able to cash in as Ethan Caldwell (Santa Fe, N.M./Santa Fe Prep School) scored off an assist from Bruce Patterson (Fork Union, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) to put the 'Cats ahead 1-0. Ferrum scored in the period to lead 2-1.

Both teams struggled to get a goal for the majority of the second quarter. Another penalty on the Panthers gave the WildCats another man-up and Patterson would assist Zach Miller (Corpus Christi, Texas/Fork Union Military Academy) on the score to even the game at 2-2 with 3:52 remaining in the period. The Panthers grabbed the lead back six seconds later but Leyton Brightly (Spotsylvania, Va./James Monroe) was able to get the equalizer at the 3:20 mark. The WildCats took the lead with 2:29 left in the quarter on Chase Callan's (Fredericksburg, Va.) solo score. The Panthers evened it up with time expiring going into halftime.

In the third quarter, Randolph scored twice in a row to go ahead 6-4 with 12:32 showing on the clock. Ferrum responded with two goals of their own to once again tie the game. Michael Baldwin (Culpepper, Va./Liberty HS) netted a goal with 2:13 left to give the 'Cats a 7-6 advantage heading into the final quarter of play.

The Panthers knotted the score at 7-7 just under 30 seconds into the fourth period. Randolph answered with a three-goal run to lead 10-7 with 8:11 remaining to play. Ferrum scored to make it 10-8 with 4:35 left. The WildCats had two 30 second penalties called on them but the Panthers could not take advantage as two Panther shots were blocked and goalkeeper Adam Ulffers (Greenville, N.C./J.H. Rose) stopped one shot.

Baldwin finished with a hat trick, the first of his career. He also assisted on a fourth goal.  Callan and Miller both had a pair of goals with Callan assisting on two others. He also picked up three groundballs and caused one turnover.  Caldwell, Brightly, and Sean Landis (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) all scored once. Patterson finished with two assists and two groundballs.

Tom Stahler (Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Township) picked up seven groundballs and was 10-of-17 on faceoffs. Kent Snoddy (Palmyra, Va./Fluvanna County) scooped up five groundballs and caused one turnover. Carlos Lopez (Falls Church, Va.) caused two turnovers.

Ulffers came up with nine saves in the cage. He had six groundball pickups.

Ferrum led in total shots 42-40. Both teams were even in groundballs at 33. The WildCats were 3-for-7 on the extra-man opportunity while the Panthers were 0-for-5.

The WildCats conclude their season on Saturday at home against Guilford. Game time will be at 1:00 p.m.
