LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph softball team hosted Bridgewater in an ODAC doubleheader on Saturday afternoon on a sunny and windy day. The Eagles won the first game 3-1 while the WildCats took the second game 9-5.
Randolph's overall record now stands at 15-9 overall and 3-1 in the ODAC. Bridgewater's record is 13-9 and also 3-1 in the conference.
The first game was scoreless until the fourth inning. Bridgewater scored first on a McKenna Mueller RBI single. The WildCats tied it up in the bottom half of the inning as
Kylie Stark (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) reached on a fielder's choice that allowed
Delaney Nuckols (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) to score. Bridgewater took the lead for good in the sixth inning with a pair of sac flies that scored a run each.
Starting pitcher
Jenna St. John (Concord, Va./Appomattox) went five innings in the circle for the 'Cats. She allowed two earned runs on seven hits and struck out four.
Olesia Walch (Raleigh, N.C./St. Thomas More) took the loss as she gave up one unearned run on one hit and struck out one.
Nuckols was 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.
Dominique Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) and
Jenna McDermott (Townsend, Del./Middletown) were both 1-for-3 and each had a stolen base. Stark went 1-for-3 with a RBI.
In the second game, McDermott's sac fly plated a run to get the WildCats on the scoreboard in the first inning. In the third inning, Nuckols and Stark both hit RBI singles to score two runs and put Randolph ahead 3-0.
The Eagles evened the game with a three-run fourth inning. In the WIldCat fourth, Walch singled to load the bases with one out. Irving walked to bring a run home.
Lacey Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) was hit by a pitch which allowed another run to score. Nuckols reached on a fielder's choice but Walch was thrown out at the plate. McDermott walked to scored the third run of the inning. Stark then laced a single down the left field line to bring home two runs.
Railey Oetken (Chesapeake, Va./Deep Creek HS) singled to right field to score McDermott to make it 9-3 Randolph.
The Eagles looked to get back a few runs in the fifth as they had bases loaded with no out. Walch induced two pop ups and a foul out to keep BC from scoring. Bridgewater scored once in the sixth and seventh innings but it was not enough as Walch was able to secure the victory for the WildCats in the end.
Starting pitcher
Paige Scruggs (Cowpens, S.C./Chesnee) went three innings in the circle and allowed one hit while walking one and struck out two.
Emily Morris (Esmont, Va./Monticello) pitched 1/3 inning and allowed three earned runs on two hits. She walked two and struck out one. Walch pitched the remaining 3 2/3 innings. She gave up just two earned runs on 10 hits striking out one Eagle.
Stark was 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI. Irving hit 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI. Lucado was 1-for-1 with two runs scored and 1 RBI. Nuckols was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a RBI. She stole a pair of bases.
Randolph makes the short trip across town on Wednesday as it squares off against cross-city rival and currently #16 ranked Lynchburg. Game 1 of the doubleheader starts at 2:30 p.m.
