Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Eagles 21-13

LYNCHBURG, Va.- For the first time in their respective histories, the University of Northwestern and Randolph women's lacrosse teams met on Wednesday at WildCat Stadium. A tight game saw the visiting Eagles pull away in the second half on their way to a 21-13 victory.

UNW scored the first two goals of the game in the first quarter to lead 2-0 with 7:44 remaining in the period. Randolph rattled off three straight scores to take a 3-2 lead with 4:32 left. The Eagles scored twice more to go on top 4-3 before a Sophia Cirone (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) goal with 12 seconds remaining knotted the contest at 4-4.

Beverly Alcock's (Purcellville, Va.) free position goal less than a minute into the second quarter put the 'Cats ahead 5-4. UNW scored to tie at 5-5 and then later went ahead 6-5 with 4:36 left in the period. A goal by Maddie Friel (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) tied the game at 6-all. The Eagles scored three more times to pull away and lead 9-6 at halftime.

Northwestern's Abby Scheel scored with 13:19 showing on the game clock in the third quarter to put the Eagles up 10-6. Their lead would eventually grow to 17-9 before Olivia Richards' (Limestone, Tenn./Pinecrest (NC) goal with 2:09 remaining made it 17-10.

The Eagle lead grew to 10 goals, 21-11, with 3:50 left in regulation. Randolph scored twice in the final 1:14 to close to within eight goals.

The Eagles led in total shots 39-30. Both teams registered 15 groundballs on the evening. Randolph did win 20 draws to UNW's 17.

Cirone led the 'Cats with six goals and added two assists for an eight-point night. She won seven draw controls. Richards scored three times, caused three turnovers, and won three draws. Friel and Cristina Berenguer-Llongueras (Barcelona, Spain) both scored once.

Goalkeeping duties were split among four players. Friel started and made four saves. Quinn Hooper (Smithfield, Va./Isle of Wight Academy) came in the second quarter and stopped three shots. Lauren Johnson (Chesterfield, Va./Steward School) filled in the third quarter and came away with two saves. Logan Warren (Chesterfield, Va./Steward School) played the fourth quarter and made one save.

Randolph hosts Greensboro on Saturday. Game time is at 1:00 p.m.
