LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph women's lacrosse team hosted Warren Wilson College at a cold and blustery WildCat Stadium on Monday evening. The WildCats pulled away with a late run to come away with a 14-10 victory.
The win improves Randolph's overall record to 4-2. The Owls fall to 1-3.
Warren Wilson scored the game's first two goals in the first quarter to take a 2-0 lead. Randolph answered with a pair of scores to knot it at 2-2.
The Owls grabbed the lead back less than a minute into the second quarter. The WildCats responded with two goals to go ahead 4-3 with 10:42 remaining in the period. Both teams would each exchange a goal. The Owls tied the game at 6-6 with 2:15 left then went ahead 7-6 with 47 ticks on the clock to take a one-goal advantage at halftime.
In the third quarter, both teams took advantage of a man-up situation to score. Randolph eventually tied it up with 2:47 showing on the game clock on a
Beverly Alcock (Purcellville, Va.) solo shot. She would assist
Sophia Cirone (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) on her goal just over a minute later. Cirone tallied an unassisted goal with 43 seconds remaining to give the 'Cats a 10-8 lead.
Randolph scored three straight times in the fourth quarter to go up 13-8. The Owls scored twice more with a WildCat goal sandwiched in between. Randolph held Warren Wilson scoreless for the final 6:37 as they limited the Owls to two shots.
The WildCats led in total shots 32-28 and in shots on goal 25-17. Both teams were even in draws won with 14. Warren Wilson had a 23-19 advantage in ground balls.
Cirone led the 'Cats with seven goals. She won six draws. Alcock netted five goals and assisted on two others. She won five draws.
Olivia Richards (Limestone, Tenn./Pinecrest (NC) scored twice and assisted on a third goal. She picked up three groundballs and won two draws.
Yanessa Cabrera (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) had a team-high five groundballs.
Taylor Batty (Hampton, Va./Kecoughtan) had four groundball pickups while also coming away with seven saves in the cage.
Mackenzie Woodson (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Collegiate) and
Cristina Berenguer-Llongueras (Barcelona, Spain) both caused two turnovers.
Randolph hosts Lycoming College on Wednesday afternoon. Game time is at 1:00 p.m.
