LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph women's lacrosse team hosted Lycoming in an early afternoon game on Wednesday at WildCat Stadium. The Warriors got out to a big lead on the WildCats and Randolph nearly came all the way back but came up short as Lycoming would win 17-11.
Lycoming led 3-0 with 9:32 remaining in the first quarter. A yellow card on the Warriors granted the WildCats a man-up opportunity.
Sophia Cirone (Stuart, Fla./South Fork) scored on a free position goal to get Randolph on the board with 7:46 left in the quarter. Lycoming scored twice more in the period to lead 5-1.
The WildCats closed to within three goals, 7-4, with 2:32 left to play in the second quarter. Lycoming tallied two scores to lead 9-4 at halftime.
The Warriors put up three straight goals in the third quarter to push their advantage to 12-4. It would 14-5 Lycoming at the conclusion of the period.
Randolph rallied in the fourth quarter.
Beverly Alcock (Purcellville, Va.) scored two straight times followed by
Yanessa Cabrera (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) and then Alcock again to move the WildCats to within five goals of tying at 14-9 with just over eight minutes remaining to play in regulation. That would be as close as the 'Cats would get at Lycoming stayed out it front for the remainer of the period.
The Warriors had a slight advantage in total shots 36-35 and led 26-20 in shots on goal. Randolph did lead in the groundball battle 20-13 and had 10 free position goals compared to seven for Lycoming.
Alcock and Cirone both scored four times with Cirone assisting on two other goals. She won eight draws and picked up four groundballs.
Olivia Richards (Limestone, Tenn./Pinecrest (NC) netted two goals and won two draws. Cabrera scored once and picked up an assist while coming up with five groundballs and causing one turnover.
Taylor Batty (Hampton, Va./Kecoughtan) led the team with seven groundballs. She had nine saves in the cage for the 'Cats.
Randolph is idle until March 25 when it opens conference play at home against Bridgewater. Game time is at 12:00 p.m.
