LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph softball team played its last home doubleheader before spring break on Wednesday afternoon as the WildCats hosted Mary Baldwin. The Fighting Squirrels took the first game 9-4 while Randolph claimed Game 2 by the score of 2-1.
In the second game, Randolph went ahead 1-0 on
Jenna McDermott's (Townsend, Del./Middletown) RBI triple. Mary Baldwin answered with a run in their portion of the fifth inning to tie the game up at 1-1. In the Randolph fifth,
Dominique Irving's (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) RBI single put the 'Cats ahead 2-1. Starting pitcher
Olesia Walch (Raliegh, N.C./St. Thomas More) allowed a leadoff double in the top of the sixth inning but then retired six straight batters to pick up the victory for the WildCats.
McDermott finished 1-for-3 with a triple and a RBI.
Lacey Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) and
Mackenzie Eggers (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) were both 1-for-3 with doubles.
Walch went the distance in the circle as she allowed just one run on four hits. She walked one and struck out three.
In the opener, Randolph led 3-0 after the first inning. Mary Baldwin answered with a nine-run second inning to jump ahead 9-3. The score remained that way until the fourth inning as the WildCats plated a run on
Alexa Tretola's (Morrisville, N.C./Panther Creek) RBI single. The WildCats left 11 runners left on base.
Emily Morris (Esmont, Va./Monticello) started for the WildCats. She allowed seven runs on four hits and walked three in 1 1/3 innings.
Jenna St. John (Concord, Va./Appomattox) came in relief for the last 5 2/3 innings. She allowed just two runs on five hits. She struck out one.
Irving and
Delaney Nuckols (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) were both 2-for-3 at the plate. Lucado was 2-for-4. McDermott went 1-for-4 with a run scored, a RBI, and she stole one base. Tretola went 2-for-3.
Randolph travels to Myrtle Beach for their Spring Break next week. The WildCats will play the University of Maine, Presque Isle on Monday at 11:00 am followed by Utica University at 5:00 p.m.
