SWEET BRIAR, VA.- The Randolph women's lacrosse team made the short trip to the campus of Sweet Briar on Wednesday afternoon to face the Vixens. The WildCats' big lead shrunk in the second quarter but Randolph used a 6-0 run spanning the third and fourth quarters to come away with a 16-10 victory.
The WildCats led 4-0 with 8:34 remaining in the first quarter. Randolph would go on to lead 6-1 at the end of the period.
The Randolph lead grew to 8-1 with 10:30 left to play in the second quarter. Sweet Briar rallied to score six straight times to make it 8-7 with 1:14 remaining in the period. Goals by
Sophia Cirone (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) and
Beverly Alcock (Purcellville, Va.) put the WildCat lead up to three goals, 10-7, at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Vixens scored three times to tie the game at 10-10 with a little over nine minutes to play in the period.
Olivia Richards (Limestone, Tenn./Pinecrest) scored on a solo shot less than a minute later to give the WildCats the lead for good and then scored again with 5:39 remaining to make it 12-10. Alcock scored to give the 'Cats a 13-10 advantage.
It was all Randolph in the fourth quarter as the WildCats scored three times. The WildCats held the Vixens to one shot which came on a free position with 37 seconds remaining.
The WildCats outshot the Vixens 40-21 and had 30-15 advantage in shots on goal. Groundballs favored Randolph 32-19 and draw controls 18-12.
Cirone led the team with six goals. She won five draws and picked up five groundballs. Richards scored four times and assisted on a fifth goal. Alcock also scored four times. She had a team-high six groundballs and caused three turnovers.
Logan Warren (Chesterfield, Va./Steward School) had a goal and assist.
Mackenzie Woodson (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Collegiate) also scored once.
Cristina Berenguer-Llongueras (Barcelona, Spain) caused four turnovers and won five draws.
Quinn Hooper (Smithfield, Va./Isle of Wight Academy) also caused four turnovers.
Taylor Batty (Hampton, Va./Kecoughtan) stopped five shots in picking up the win.
Randolph hosts Eastern Mennonite on its home opener next Wednesday March 1. Game time from WildCat Stadium is at 5:00 p.m.
