LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph women's basketball team returned to the hardwood on Friday night as it played an exhibition against Liberty University at Liberty Arena. The Flames won the game by the score of 69-49.
"So proud of my squad tonight," said head coach Steve Lanher after the game. "We represented our program and Randolph College with utmost honor."
The WildCats trailed 20-8 after the first quarter of play. It was 37-12 Flames at halftime.
"We stuggled shooting the ball early as we were a little anxious and rushed some open looks," said Lanpher. " In the first half, they hurt us with their size and high low game but we made some defensive adjustments and made it more difficult."
Randolph scored 17 points in third quarter as it shot 5-of-14 (35.7%) from the field and 3-of-8 (37.5%) from behind the three-point arc.
The WildCats outscored the Flames 20-12 in the fourth period. Randolph made 40% of its shots overall and from behind the arc. The 'Cats closed the game to 16 points twice during the final period of play.
"To be able to outscore Liberty in the second half and force them into 17 turnovers while we only committed 11 is a testament to our connectiveness," noted Lanpher.
Kylie Stark (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) led Randolph with 11 points adding six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Caiyah Smith (Manassas, Va./Virginia Academy) added 10 points, two rebounds, and two assists. Cameron O'Neil (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) scored nine points to go with four rebounds. Jessica Jennings (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) finished with eight points and five assists.
"Kylie once again showed her all around game with scoring, rebounding, and assists," said Lanpher. " Cai Smith continues to grow daily and performed well in her first start of the year."
Randolph returns home to host Mary Baldwin on Sunday afternoon. Game time from Giles Gymnasium will be at 2:00 p.m.
