WildCat Men Fall To Yellow Jackets

LYNCHBURG, Va. Defending ODAC champion Randolph-Macon came to Giles Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon as they faced Randolph's men's basketball team. A close game at halftime then saw the  Jackets pull away in the second half with a 40-29 advantage as they won by the score of 71-52.

The two teams were neck and neck early on in the first half as the score was tied 10-10 at the 13:40 mark. The Yellow Jackets went on a 17-6 run to lead 27-16 with 6:46 remaining in the period. Randolph was able to cut it to a two-possession game, 27-21, with 4:47 left in the half. The score would stand at 31-23 at halftime.

In the second half, Lance Johnson's three-point basket gave the visitors a 34-23 advantage. A pair of free throws by Danny Bickey (Beckley, W.V./Woodrow Wilson) got the 'Cats to within nine points. From that point, Randolph-Macon then went on a 10-0 run to increase its lead to 19 points, 44-25, with 15:12 showing on the game clock. The Jackets maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the half, going up by as much as 24 points with a little over four minutes remaining.

Randolph shot 17-of-42 (40.5%) from the floor but were just 3-of-15 (20%) from behind the three-point arc. Randolph-Macon was 27-of-60 (45%) overall and 12-of-30 (40%) in three-point attempts. Randolph had the edge in rebounds 32-29.

Evan Wiehe (Northfield, OH/Nordonia) led all scorers with 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting. Moustapha Diop (Fuquay Varina, N.C./Apex Friendship) added eight points.

"Good to see Evan assert himself offensively," said head coach Pete Hamilton. "He has a lot of talent and hopefully that will springboard him into a bigger role offensively going forward."

The WildCats travel to Eastern Mennonite on Wednesday. Game time from Harrisonburg is at 5:00 p.m.
