LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's basketball team made the short trip across town to the University of Lynchburg on Wednesday to face the Hornets in ODAC play. Lynchburg would win the game by the score of 79-63.
In the first half, both teams were within at least two possessions of each other for just over 10 minutes of game time. The score stood at 16-16 with 9:18 remaining in the period. The Hornets used a 21-8 run to lead 38-24 at halftime.
The WildCats got out to a fast start in the second half as they started the period on an 11-0 run to close to within three points at 38-35. Lynchburg responded with a 10-0 run to restore its double-digit lead, 48-35, with under 14 minutes remaining to play. Randolph was able to whittle its deficit down to eight points, 66-58, with 4:32 left in the game. That would be as close as the WildCats would get as the Hornets ended the game on a 13-5 run.
Randolph was 22-of-52 overall (42.3%) and just 4-of-20 (20%) from behind the three-point arc. The WildCats did make 15-16 (93.8%) of their free throws. Lynchburg went 30-of-63 (47.6%) and 9-of-21 (42.9%) in three-point attempts. The WildCats did lead in rebounds 35-31.
Danny Bickey (Beckley, W.V./Woodrow Wilson) led the 'Cats with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Amari Gorham (Yorktown, Va./Yorktown) added 14 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Landon Wagoner (Martinsville ,Va./Carlise School) led in rebounds with 10.
The WildCats host defending conference champion Randolph-Macon on Saturday. Game time from Giles Gymnasium will be at 2:00 p.m.
