Women’s Hoops Takes Down Lynchburg 64-40 in ODAC Opener

LYNCHBURG, Va.- It was an early ODAC meeting between the Randolph and Lynchburg women's basketball teams as the cross-city rivals met on Wednesday evening at a packed Giles Gymnasium. The WildCats blew the game open in the second half as they went on to win 64-40.

The win is the first for Randolph on its home floor over Lynchburg since 2009. The 24-point margin of victory is the most in a WildCat win over Lynchburg since a 75-44 victory back in 1976.

"Cross-town rivalry games are always tough but we came out with the appropriate intensity and established our defensive presence early," said head coach Steve Lanpher.

The WildCats scored the first points of the game on a layup by Abbie Baker (Salem, Va./Patrick Henry) but the Hornets netted back-to-back threes to go ahead 6-2. Randolph countered with a 10-0 run to go ahead 12-6. Randolph led 19-12 at the end of the quarter.

Lynchburg closed to within five points at the beginning of the second quarter. Randolph got out in front 27-16 with just over seven minutes remaining in the period. The Hornets used a 6-1 run to close to within six points at 28-22 with under two minutes remaining in the period but Randolph would go on to lead 32-23 at the break.

The WildCats came out strong in the third quarter as they scored 12 straight points to up their advantage to 44-23 with 4:34 to play. Lynchburg did not score its first basket of the period until 3:37 was left on the clock and went 0-for-7 from the floor prior. Randolph was in cruise control from that point as its lead was never threatened.

Randolph was 21-of-57 (36.8%) overall and 5-of-14 (35.7%) from behind the three-point arc. Lynchburg was just 12-of-60 (20%) from the floor and only 3-of-29 (10.3%) in three-point attempts. The WIldCats controlled the glass with a 54-37 advantage.

The WildCats controlled the paint 30-18 and was 16-8 in points off turnovers.

Kylie Stark (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) scored 16 points on 4-of-6 shooting to lead the team. Teniyah Crenshaw-Patterson (Newport News, Va./Heritage) added 14 points and a team-high 12 rebounds along with two assists and two blocks. Jessica Jennings (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) chipped in eight points, five assists, and four rebounds.

"I thought Kylie, Tee, and Jess really got us going offensively," noted Lanpher. "The third quarter we put the game away holding them without a field goal for almost seven minutes. Offensively, Tee and Kylie took over and allowed us to cruise to the victory. Our post trio of Abbie, Simone, and Tyra really dominated the paint well with 11 points, 14 rebounds and two blocks. Taniya Jackson and Imani gave us great back up minutes from the point guard spot. A lot to improve on but happy to start ODAC play with a win!"

Randolph travels to Carolina University on Friday. Game time from Winston-Salem is at 7:00 p.m.
