Volleyball Defeats Lynchburg 3-1

LYNCHBURG, Va.- It was a loud and raucous Giles Gymnasium as the Randolph volleyball team squared off against cross city and ODAC rival Lynchburg on Wednesday evening. The WildCats went four sets with the Hornets as they were able to win 3-1 (25-21, 20-25, 25-19, 25-22).

The victory marks the first for Randolph over Lynchburg since October 2019 which the 'Cats won at home 3-2 and ended a three-match winless streak to the Hornets. The WildCats even their overall record at 9-9 and improve to 2-5 in ODAC play. Lynchburg drops to 6-8 overall and 3-5 in conference play.

Randolph led 4-3 in the first set until the Hornets went on a 5-0 run to go ahead 8-4. Randolph answered with a 5-1 run to knot the set at 9-9. Lynchburg countered with a 4-0 run to lead 13-9 but the 'Cats rallied with an 11-2 run to go ahead 21-16. The Hornets were able to close to within three points at 24-21 but Tahani VIllines (Whittset, N.C./Williams) registered the kill to give Randolph the set win 25-21.

Lynchburg got out ahead 14-8 in the second set. The Hornet lead got up to 22-16. Randolph closed to 22-18 but the Hornets stayed out in front as it claimed the set 25-20.

Lynchburg led 6-3 in the third set until Randolph scored four straight points to go ahead 7-6. The Hornets came back to go ahead 16-15 but the 'Cats went on a 10-3 run to close out the frame and win 25-19.

The Hornets led 13-10 in the fourth set and after the WildCats briefly took a 14-13 lead, Lynchburg scored three points to go up 16-14. The lead stood at 18-16 but a 5-1 WildCat run gave the home team a 21-19 advantage. Lynchburg tied it up at 21-all but Randolph closed out the set on a 4-1 run that was capped off by a McKayla Padgett (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) kill to take match win.

Villines led with nine kills and added 16 digs. Padgett finished with eight kills, three digs, and two block assists. Brooke Murdock (Evington, Va./Timberlake Christian) chipped in eight kills and a team-high nine total blocks. Jayda Domenech (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) put up a team-high 19 assists to go with seven digs. Gracie Fulton (Staunton, Va./Riverheads) posted a team-high 26 digs. Vivianna Gustin (Virginia Beach, Va./Bayside) finished with 11 digs.

Randolph travels to Bridgewater on Saturday as it will face the Eagles at 11:00 a.m. The WildCats finish the day with a match against Regent at 3:00 p.m.
