Women’s Soccer Drops Regular Season Finale to Randolph-Macon 3-2

ASHLAND, Va.- The Randolph women's soccer team battled with Randolph-Macon in the final ODAC regular season game for both teams on Saturday afternoon. In a game that saw the lead change hands three times, the Yellow Jackets scored a late goal in the second half to come back and defeat the WildCats 3-2.

Just over two minutes into the contest, Randolph-Macon got on the board on a solo score by Rily Russ. Randolph countered in the 26th minute on a Joanne Torres' (North Chesterfield, Va./Meadowbrook) solo goal.

The 'Jackets nearly grabbed the lead back in the 43rd minute when a free kick by Lauren Donovan bounced off the lower portion of the crossbar. Despite Randolph-Macon dominating in shots 12-2 in the period, the teams went into halftime tied at 1-1.

In the second half, Randolph struggled to get any offensive momentum going. In the 72nd minute, the WildCats finally had their opportunity. The 'Cats were granted a corner kick and Julia Crider's (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) offering found the leg of Carlynne Wright (Lynchburg, Va./Jefferson Forest) who booted the ball into the back of the net to put the WildCats ahead 2-1.

With the lead, the WildCats needed to stave off a Yellow Jacket response. The Randolph defense did its best to keep Randolph-Macon off balance. In the 84th minute, however, a foul on Emma Johnson (Concord, Va./Rustburg) in the box granted the 'Jackets a penalty kick. Sammie Hoefs converted the opportunity and the game was knotted at 2-2.

Both teams now looked for a game-winning score. The Yellow Jackets made their way down the field and scored in the 89th minute to take the lead for good to complete the comeback.

Total shots favored Randolph-Macon 20-6. Shots on goal were a bit closer with the Yellow Jackets holding a 9-6 advantage.

Alexis Bossi (Falls Church, Va./Justice) finished with six saves in goal for the WildCats. Zoe Long stopped four saves for the 'Jackets.

Randolph ends its season with a final record of 8-8-3 overall and a 2-7-1 mark in ODAC play.
