LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph volleyball team hosted Salem College on Wednesday night at Giles Gymnasium. The Spirits had the upper hand on the WildCats as they won the match 3-0 (9-25, 12-25, 22-25).
Trailing 11-3 in the first set, Randolph tallied three straight points to make the score 11-6. Salem pushed ahead 14-6 until Brooklyn Finnerty (Lynchburg, Va./Timberlake) notched a kill to make it 14-7. That would be as close as the 'Cats would get as the Spirits would outscore them 11 -2 to claim the set.
Salem got out to leads of 4-0 and 5-1 in the second set. The WildCats were able to close to within a point at 7-6. Randolph was able to keep pace with the Spirits as it trailed 15-11. The Spirits used a big 10-1 to claim the set 25-12.
Salem led 8-2 in the third set and as much as 14-6. The WildCats rallied to close the score to 15-13. Down 22-19, Randolph tied the set up at 22-all. Salem, however, got three straight kills by Ella Brameus to take the set and win the match.
Finnerty led the WIldCats with nine kills and five total blocks hitting .316 in the match. Jayda Domenech (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) had a team-high 10 digs and three service aces to go with seven assists. Melody Washington (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) led in assists with 10.
Randolph competes in the Maroon Classic on Friday and Saturday. The WildCats will face Mary Baldwin at 4:00 p.m. on Friday followed by North Carolina Wesleyan at 6:00 p.m.
