Softball Splits Doubleheader at Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va.- The Randolph softball team traveled to Shenandoah to face the Hornets in an ODAC doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. SU won the first game 2-1 while the WildCats took the second game 7-3.

The win in the second game halts a nine-game winless streak for the 'Cats. Their overall record is now 7-22 and 1-7 in conference play.

In the first game, the WildCats got on the board first on a Diane Mahiai (Chesapeake, Va./Salem) RBI single in the first inning to go ahead 1-0. Randolph nearly added to its lead in the fourth inning. Paige Naples (Bedford, Va./Liberty HS) singled to load the bases with one out. Railey Oetken (Chesapeake, Va./Deep Creek) reached on fielder's choice but Liz Mason (Lynchburg, Va./Heritage) was tagged out at home. Delaney Nuckols (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) then reached on a fielder's choice but Naples was out at third base and the inning was over.

Starting pitcher Paige Scruggs (Cowpens, S.C./Chesnee) allowed four hits and walked four while striking out three batters. She got one out in the seventh inning and was replaced by Jenna St. John (Concord, Va./Appomattox). St, John got a runner out on a fielder's choice. A wild pitch let runners advance to second and third base, respectively. A walk loaded the bases and then a two-run double by Tiffany Bower scored the tying and winning runs for the Hornets. Both runs were charged to Scruggs.

Allie Jarrett (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) was 2-for-4 with a double. Dominique Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

In the second game, Randolph got out ahead 2-0. Jarrett triple a run home and Mahiai's RBI single scored the second run. In the fifth inning, Mahiai doubled home another run to make it 3-0 WildCats. Kayla Love (League City, Texas/Tallwood) singled in two runs to score and the WildCat lead upped to 5-0.

Shenandoah scored twice in its' portion of the fifth inning to close to 5-2. The 'Cats got both runs back as Jarrett's single in the sixth inning scored a pair of runs to make it 7-2. The Hornets got a solo homer from Baylee Jenkins in their half of the sixth inning.

Chloe Persinger (Buena Vista, Va./Parry McCluer) got the win in the circle for the WildCats as she went 5 1/3 innings allowing three runs on five hits. She walked one and struck out one. Danielle Shannon (Greensville, Va./Riverheads) picked up the save in 1 2/3 innings of work. She allowed one hit.

Irving collected three hits and scored three runs. She also stole a base. Jarrett went 2-for-3 with her triple, two runs scored, and three runs batted in. Mahiai hit 2-for-4 with a double, one run scored, and two RBI. Love was 2-for-4 with two RBI and she stole a base. Nuckols was 1-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.

Randolph hosts #10 Roanoke tomorrow afternoon. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 2:00 p.m.
