WildCats Fall to #10 Roanoke in ODAC Doubleheader

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph softball team hosted #10 Roanoke in an ODAC doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Maroons won both games by scores of 2-1 and 8-6.

In the first game, both pitchers went the distance in the circle. Jenna St. John (Concord, Va./Appomattox) allowed two runs on four hits, walking one and striking out one. Roanoke's Jada Karnes surrendered one unearned run on three hits and struck out five.

The Maroons took the lead with a run in the first inning. They would later go up 2-0 in the second inning.

In the Randolph fourth, Allie Jarrett (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) led off with single up the middle and was replaced by pinch runner Liz Mason (Lynchburg, Va./Heritage). After Diane Mahiai (Chesapeake, Va./Salem) popped out, Lacey Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) sacrifice bunted to move Mason to second. Mason advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball to get the WildCats on the board. The WildCats had the potential tying run on third base in the sixth inning but the runner would be left stranded.

Jarrett had two of Randolph's three hits. Dominique Irving (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) was 1-for-3 with a double.

In the second game, Roanoke led 1-0 in the first inning. Randolph responded in the second. Paige Naples (Bedford, Va./Liberty HS) scored from third base on a throwing error by the Maroons catcher to tie the game at 1-1. In the third inning, Jarrett's RBI groundout scored Irving to tie the game. The WildCats took the lead on a Mahiai RBI single.

RC plated a pair of runs in the fourth inning to tie the game at 3-3. In the WildCat sixth inning, the bases were loaded and Kayla Love's (League City, Texas/Tallwood) RBI single scored Lucado to give the 'Cats the lead. Taylor Friess (Goode, Va./Liberty HS) came to the plate and doubled to left field to score Chloe Persinger (Buena Vista, Va./Parry McCluer) while Love was tagged out at home and the Randolph lead was 5-3.

With two outs in the top of the seventh inning, Roanoke rallied. Two runs would score on a single and error to tie the game at 5-5 and a wild pitch scored a third run to put the visitors ahead. Two more runs came home as RC led 8-5.

The WildCats headed to their portion of the seventh inning needing a rally. Delaney Nuckols (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) led off with a single and then advanced to second base on a passed ball. Mahiai singled to short. Naples singled up the middle of the field to allow Nuckols to score. With runners on first and second and one out, Lucado struck out and Emily Morris (Esmont, Va./Monticello) grounded out to end the game.

Paige Scruggs (Cowpens, S.C./Chesnee) started in the circle and went five innings. She allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits. She walked four and struck out two.
